Rev. Jean Newell |
With a great deal of "pomp and circumstance," the new Bishop of the Desert Southwest Conference was handed a helmet to wear. Then with helmet securely in place on his head, Bishop Bob Hoshibata cried out, "Sock it to me!" Immediately, bombarded by hundreds and hundreds of socks from every corner of the conference hall, the Bishop joyfully welcomed the avalanche of socks reflecting the success of that year's Annual Conference Mission Project. The socks which had been collected by churches throughout the Conference were donated to local shelters for the needy.
This year, the Mission Project for Annual Conference is four-fold in nature. Churches are invited to be a part of the 2019 Annual Conference Mission Projects by collecting donations for any or all of the following projects:
- Asylum Seekers Relief Project - These donations go to churches working with people coming to Arizona seeking asylum. These individuals have been cleared with ICE and are seeking to legally immigrate into the United States.
- Homeless/Hungry Youth & Young Adults - Contributions go to programs providing support for homeless/hungry college students.
- Huachuca UMC Fire Relief - Funds will go to relief and aid for this church after experiencing multiple fires.
- US Disaster Relief - These offerings help those affected by floods or other natural disasters in the United States.
Direct your donation to Sun Lakes UMC and indicate the project you are supporting. The total of all monies collected from all churches in the Desert Southwest Conference will be announced at the upcoming Annual Conference (June 13-16). Thank you for your generous support!

Eternal God, we are gathered here in our "Sunday best." We really want our "Sunday best" to be the way we look and live all week. Touch us anew with your life-giving presence. Wrap us in your strong arms of love. Clothe us in your grace. Most of the time we feel frail, vulnerable, exposed to fear, pain and the threats of life. Envelope us with power from on high. O Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, wash us and we shall be clean. Wash our soiled garments. Make us ready to live with and for you, not just one Sunday, but for each day and for all eternity. Amen.

UMW SUMMER SERIES 2019 - #1 |
Sun Lakes United Methodist Women (UMW), an integral ministry within Sun Lakes United Methodist Church, is looking for new members: Women of God who are committed to the teachings of Jesus and have a burning desire to fulfill his commandment to, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind...and love your neighbor as yourself."
UMW is about spiritual growth and developing a supportive fellowship. But, UMW is also about reaching out to our neighbors in need and filling that need, not only locally but also globally. UMW is about an international vision: "Turning faith, hope and love into action on behalf of women, children and youth around the world."
We are taking a break this summer but will hit the ground running this fall when the snowbirds land. If you are a new church member--or been around awhile--and are looking for a way to serve the Lord, watch the Kairos for more information about what we do and how you can participate.
