THANK YOU FOR BEING THE HEART OF OUR ASSOCIATION.
KBA.ORG GETS A FACELIFT
The KBA is excited to announce we have launched a new website. We're always looking for ways to expand and improve our services for KBA members, and the new website is one example.

Our major goals in developing the new site were:

  • Make it easier for members to find and access our online resources.
  • Integrate our membership database into our website.
  • Create portals that allow online registration for upcoming events.
  • Create an invoicing system and accept online payments for member dues.
  • Improve our board, district and committee communication by having a place were we can upload and archive important documents that pertain to those serving.

Each station manager/or owner received an invitation email from the new site Wednesday, January 13th with information on how to log-in to the site for the first time. We found that a lot of these emails went to your junk folders as they are coming from the new site for the first time. If you did not receive a welcome invitation, please email kba@kba.org and we will send one to you today. Once you have received you log-in, take a moment to verify your member profile is up-to-date. Managers will be able to add multiple stations, list employees to their profile an even upload pictures. In addition, you can choose to be included (or to NOT be included) in the referral directory for the public and/or for other KBA members.

Improvements will stop here. We encourage your feedback on how the site is working for you, and on other improvements we might implement. If you experience difficulty accessing the new website, please delete your browsing history and/or cache. If you are having other technical difficulties or have suggestions on ways that we can improve our web site or service to members, please contact us at   kba@kba.org .

We invite you to visit the new site by clicking here.

FCC LAUNCHES CONSUMER HOTLINE REPACK
Phase 2 of the spectrum repack is underway. Last week, the FCC announced a consumer call center to help viewers navigate the rescan process that must occur each time a station transitions to a new frequency. Viewers may reach the call center at 1-888-CALLFCC (1-888-225-5322) and press 6 to speak to a help desk representative. The call center is staffed 8-1 a.m. ET seven days a week. See the FCC’s press release here.

KBA encourages stations transitioning as part of the repack to utilize this hotline, in addition to using the viewer education tools available at NAB’s website TVAnswers.org/tools. On-air and online tools, including spots, talking points, sample scripts and crawls and even automated phone messaging are available, along with customizable spots in English and Spanish this instruct viewers how to rescan their TVs and converter boxes.

SMALL & MEDIUM MARKET RADIO SUMMIT
The Kentucky Broadcasters Association, Ohio Association of Broadcasters and the Indiana Broadcasters Association have been discussing a joint forum for managers at our member radio stations in 2019. The thought is that our combined resources would allow us to bring in some high-caliber speakers, provide time for idea exchange and networking, and offer a memorable experience for our members.

Before we move forward with planning, however, we want to make sure our members would be interested in attending such an event. To that end, we have developed a short survey to assess interest and get suggestions about the kinds of sessions or speakers you’d be interested in having included in the program.
PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Chris Winkle
President/CEO
From time to time we receive questions from members about EEO rules and policies regarding anti-discrimination, community outreach, recordkeeping, public file, etc. The FCC’s current EEO rule went into effect 16 years ago, on March 10, 2003. The Rule requires extensive outreach efforts, substantial recordkeeping, periodic reports filed with the FCC, and the placement of those reports in stations’ public inspection files and on their websites. Broadcasters must also analyze the results of their recruitment efforts to ensure that broad outreach is being achieved. Under the EEO Rule, broadcasters face the prospect of EEO complaints filed by the public throughout the license term, petitions to deny at license renewal time, and periodic FCC audits and/or investigations. Implementing the best practices described herein remains a station’s best evidence that it is taking these requirements very seriously and is seeking to comply with them. A few years ago, our friends at Pillsbury put together broadcasters guide to understanding EEO rules and policies, along with sample recruitment and public file documents. Click here to view the guide. If you have any questions regarding the EEO Rule, please contact Dawn Sciarrino on KBA’s free Legal Hotline at (202) 256-9551.

LBS WEEKLY FEATURED VIDEOS

Mike Cheney, expert in the art of understanding people, answers LIVE broadcaster questions! In this session:
Why do I have clients who spend lots of money with me every month, but won’t return a call?
Sometimes our station has what I call a “fire sale” which is a limited number of highly discounted spots. How do different clients respond to this tactic?
My manager wants 2-4 updates on my sales activities every day. How can I get him what he needs without spending so much time on generating reports?

Gary Moore explains the characteristics of dominant personalities and offers techniques for improving sales ratios with this personality type.

Sally Kohn offers some great promotional ideas around the theme of your audience’s personal inspiration. These ideas can be customized for any-sized advertiser and can even be scaled down to open up opportunities for smaller local clients you don’t normally pursue!
