NEWSLETTER QUICK NOTES...
Even as stations continue to struggle from the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, you are on the front lines providing critical, lifesaving support to your communities. That is why we are working hard to ensure Congress includes broadcasters in new COVID-19 relief legislation. We continue to fight for the passage of the Local News and Emergency Information Act, which would expand broadcasters' access to Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, and to advocate for federal advertising dollars to be allocated to local media. Act now to urge Congress to pass this legislation.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee recently passed the "Expanding Broadcast Ownership Opportunities Act of 2019," legislation from Rep. G.K. Butterfield (NC-01) that aims to reinstate the diversity tax certificate program and provide meaningful opportunities for more diverse ownership of broadcast stations. The tax certificate program, repealed in 1995, would provide a tax incentive to those who sold their majority interest in a broadcast station to minorities. The Expanding Broadcast Ownership Opportunities Act of 2019 would reinstate the program to encourage investment in broadcast station ownership for women and people of color and dramatically help underrepresented voices realize their dreams of radio and television station ownership.
We still have a plenty of the snow-white, highly fashionable masks available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you would like additional masks, please email Amber at amber@kba.org
