STAHLMAN GRADUATES FROM BROADCAST LEADERSHIP TRAINING
|
|
WLKY's Andrea Stahlman is among the 2020 graduating class of the NAB's Broadcast Leadership Training (BLT) program. The class graduated this month following the completion of the executive MBA-style program. The BLT program teaches the fundamentals of purchasing, owning and operating radio and television stations to senior-level broadcast executives, particularly women and people of color, who aspire to advance as group executives or station owners.
Typically comprising ten in-person weekend sessions held in Washington, D.C., the program schedule and curriculum were altered to an online model and extended due to the pandemic.
“I am thrilled to see this class of talented broadcasters join the ranks of industry leaders who have grown from this program," said NAB Foundation President Michelle Duke. "The tenacity and resolve shown to adapt and continue in the toughest circumstances demonstrates their commitment to excellence and success. We look forward to watching as they achieve new career heights and positively impact the broadcast industry.”

ADVERTISING IS A BAR WHERE NOBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME...
3 Epically Tragic Mistakes that Make Advertisers Anonymous and Profitable Ways to Avoid Them
|

TUESDAY, JUNE 8TH @ 12:00 PM EDT

Anonymity is great—unless youʼre trying to sell something. Then, itʼs just an expensive explosion in an advertiserʼs face and nothing that means anything to the person who matters most: the customer.
- We have seen billboards that are cleverly drafting off of an advertiserʼs TV—but mean nothing to anyone.
- We have heard pointless and forgettable radio commercials from otherwise brilliant companies— their joy is not up there on display, just the white noise of pricing and features without personality or benefit.
- We have offered strategic, personalized solutions to anonymous advertising messages that are a miscarriage of marketing—only to be told, “No, we donʼt need to do that.
- Everyone already knows who we are.” Human beings crave relationships—and too much advertising avoids making friends in favor of massaging someoneʼs ego somewhere in the marketing food chain.
We are going to examine three ways we have seen this happen across the country and share simple solutions that can make the marketing stand up on its hind legs and make friends with customers hungry to spend money.

JEFF SCHMIDT'S SALES TIP OF THE WEEK
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
|
|
When my daughter Breanna was very young her mother and I started a tradition called “Surprise Monday.” We did this because it seems the world hates Monday’s and we wanted our daughter to not be brought down by the negativity. Surprise Monday could have been as simple as a new pencil, or a coloring book. It wasn’t so much about the item; it was about the expectation. Having her look forward to Monday was the goal. To this day Bree loves Monday, and I suspect will continue the tradition with her daughters.
The word expectation comes from the Latin word expectationem, meaning "an awaiting." If you have great expectations, you think something good will come your way, but if keep your expectations low, you won't risk being disappointed.
Expectations are more than fleeing thoughts, they are based on your deeper beliefs. What do you believe you deserve? Do you believe you deserve to be successful? Do you believe you deserve to have nice things? Do you believe in being nice to people and treating them with kindness? Do you believe others do the same? Your beliefs form your expectations and your expectations become your reality.
“That client will never buy”
“I can’t ask them to spend that much, they’ll get mad”
“Another cancellation, this always happens to me”
“That person is always rude”
Those are all belief’s that are expressed as expectations.
One of the greatest gifts my mentor Bill Mann ever gave me was to enroll me in a program with Lou Tice of the Pacific Institute. Lou is no longer with us, but his groundbreaking work on the power of ensuring your beliefs and your expectations are consistent with what you want to accomplish lives on. (I still have my cassette case box and Bill and I still quote Lou) You don’t get what you want in life, you get what you expect. And your expectations come from your beliefs.
Bill told me very early in my career, “Jeffrey, there isn’t a problem you can’t overcome, a challenge you can’t get past. The biggest obstacle you will face in your career is the noise between your ears.” Bill believed in me and challenged me to control my self-talk.
Depending on the research you read, we have as many as hundreds of conversations with ourselves each day. You’re no doubt having one right now as a result of reading this. Are you saying to yourself, “I can never do this,” or are you saying, “Yes, I’m in control of my self-talk.”
The choice is yours.
