DON'T PROCRASTINATE

BIENNIAL OWNERSHIP REPORTS DUE 12/1/23

The filing window for broadcast station Biennial Ownership Reports (FCC Form 323 for commercial stations and 323-E for noncommercial stations) opened on October 2, 2023. All licensees of commercial and noncommercial AM, FM, full-power TV, Class A TV and Low Power TV stations must submit their Ownership Reports by December 1, 2023.

To simplify the process, the FCC’s filing system permits parties to validate and resubmit previously filed ownership reports so long as those reports were submitted through the current filing system and remain accurate. Parties also have the ability to copy and then make changes to information included in a previously-filed report. To facilitate this approach, there is a search page allowing filers to search for and review their prior Ownership Reports.

As a reminder, Biennial Ownership Reports submitted during this filing window must reflect a station’s ownership as it existed on October 1, 2023, even if the station was later assigned or transferred between October 1, 2023 and December 1, 2023.

POLITICAL WEBINAR

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH @ 1:00PM EASTERN

With the 2023 election behind us, it's time to turn our attention to the 2024 political season, which has already started. 2024 is projected to be the biggest year ever for political advertising. We are already seeing many ads for candidates and we are also seeing an equal amount of disputes over the content of those ads. Are you up to date on all the FCC rules that govern your sale of political ads? Do you know who you must sell political ads to, the rates that you can charge, and all the paperwork that is required – including the latest on the online political file?

On November 29th, the staff of the FCC’s Office of Political Programming – Bobby Baker, Gary Schonman and Sima Nilsson – will be on hand, in a webinar moderated by David Oxenford of the DC law firm Wilkinson Barker Knauer LLP, to provide a refresher on the rules that you need to know to prepare for the 2024 election season, and to highlight the potential issues that may arise with political candidates and issue advertisers on your stations. Be sure that you avoid any of the problems that can arise in your sale of political advertising in 2024 by signing up for this timely webinar.

DELAY OF GAME

SAGE TO MISS EAS UPDATE DEADLINE

Engineers around the country are starting to hear that SAGE Alerting Systems has notified the FCC that its EAS ENDEC software update will be delayed. Adding insult to injury, the new update (when released) will set you back $159 per unit.

The software update is needed to bring their EAS equipment into compliance next month with new FCC rules that take effect soon – requiring EAS equipment to give preference to IPAWS Common Alerting Protocol (internet) messages over “legacy” EAS tones.

In the past, the FCC has implemented a special procedure when there was an industry-wide delay installing an update. It remains to be seen if that will happen. We will keep you informed with any additional information.

In studio and producing the live coverage was Dan Manley, Ian Corbin & Tom McMakin. The live coverage was simulcast on all Gateway Radio Works stations.

WILL YOU TRY THIS?

We believe most sellers' goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of their clients, prospects, and communities.

Here are two simple things you can do to make a difference.

  1. Sincerely compliment someone
  2. Show appreciation for what they are doing

As you structure your call list this week, would you try this?  Create a list of clients and/or prospects, call them, find something you can compliment them for, and then thank them for that contribution. You can do this on the phone, or for extra credit, write out five hand-written notes and mail them today.

In my experience, nothing gets a more positive response, and nothing makes a person feel better than a sincere compliment and appreciation for what they are doing.  Here’s an example for a car dealer:

Brad, I admire how your company has responded to the public's safety and inventory volatility over the last few years. As one of your customers, I appreciate the ability to drop my vehicle off, text you, and know you’ll take it from there.  I wanted you to know how much I appreciate you and your work.

This will catch them off guard because they are not used to it, and that’s precisely why it’s so powerful.  No sales pitch, just a compliment and appreciation, and be ready to hang up – if it’s a phone call. If you sent a card, be prepared for them to call you to thank you for the note.

If you aspire to make a difference in the lives of others, nothing is more powerful than a compliment and appreciation.  Will you add that to your activities this week?  Even just a few?  Then please let us know about the responses you receive.

Your courage and willingness to try new things have always been impressive, and we so appreciate you taking the time to interact with us. Your feedback and experiences can help us shape a future we can all be proud of.

Thank you. We look forward to hearing from you.  Email us here.
