KBA'S CHAIR-ELECT MOVING ON
CHAD LAMPE EXITS MURRAY STATE UNIVERSITY

Fellow KBA Members,
It has been a tremendous joy to serve the KBA since 2018 as the Public Radio Director and I was honored last year to be appointed Chair-Elect.
However, I must resign my role as I've accepted a new position with PRX, the Public Radio Exchange. I wasn't on the hunt for a new position at the time I accepted the chair-elect position, and frankly I thought I would retire at WKMS.
I'm grateful for the friendships I've made along the way, and I hope to stay involved in KBA as an Associate Member as I get to stay in Murray and work remotely (mostly) and this position is firmly rooted in the broadcasting business.
I'd like to thank the current executive committee, Mark Buckles and Tom McMakin, for their friendship and mentorship. They have the best interests of KBA at heart and are exceptionally equipped to steward the executive committee as my replacement is selected. Also, I'd like to thank Chris Winkle for leadership. He's thoughtful, mission-focused, committed to our fellow broadcasters and he keeps a steady hand on this organization that is so vital to all of our respective stations.
I hope to see each of you at the conference this fall to experience what promises to be a premiere event.
All the Best,
Chad

B.F.O.A. ANNOUNCES "GIVING DAY"
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29TH

The Broadcasters Foundation of America is excited to announce our first annual Radio Giving Day on Wednesday, June 29, a day to come together as one community with one common goal – to support radio professionals in need of financial assistance due to a critical illness, accident, or disaster.
The BFOA is the only charity devoted exclusively to helping radio and TV professionals in dire circumstances. Nobody believes they will ever need our support, until they do. And we work extremely hard to provide that safety net when misfortunate hits the hard-working people in radio broadcasting. Over the past several years, our list of grantees has included program directors, producers, board operators, account executives, reporters, hosts, traffic managers, and many others from the radio business.
Last year, the BFOA awarded $2 million in monthly grants to those in our broadcast community – people like you and those who work with you and for you. We also awarded one-time grants to victims of last year’s natural disasters, such as the California wildfires, Texas ice storms, and Kentucky tornadoes.
Please support Radio Giving Day and donate on Wednesday, June 29 to help all those in the broadcast community seeking help from the Broadcasters Foundation of America.

THIS WEEKS MEMBER PIC
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT TAKES TO THE AIR

Approaching her junior year at the University of Kentucky, Nolia Williams is a graduate of Owensboro High School, a resident of Hopkinsville during the summer, and the stepdaughter of the NewsEdge’s own Bill Booth.
Last month Nolia was named one of just four recipients of this year’s KBA Harry Barfield Scholarship. This summer she can be heard on-air for WKDZ, WHVO and WPKY.
A psychology/journalism double major, she’s recently moved into full-fledged journalism at UK, and she’s looking forward to the fall semester and beyond.
After her part-time summer for the NewsEdge, she’ll be taking quite a bit of experience with her to WRFL - which is the 7900-watt college radio station for UK.

JEFF SCHMIDT'S SALES TIP OF THE WEEK
POWER NEGOTIATING

Many people cringe at the word negotiation. They think of haggling over the price of a car, hammering out the details of a contract, negotiating a raise, putting a deal together. Those are all examples of what we would refer to as formal negotiations.
In its simpler, less threatening definition, negotiation is simply a discussion aimed at reaching an agreement. By that definition we are involved in hundreds of negotiations a day. Getting your pet do come in, or go out, getting your child to eat their peas, negotiating with your own self as to whether you should work out today. These are all examples of negotiation, but we don’t label it as such.
Roger Fisher and William Ury and Bruce Patton wrote a groundbreaking book on negotiating: Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In. “Like it or not says Fisher, you are a negotiator. Everyone negotiates something every day.
As you might expect, Lawyers have extensive training on the skill of negotiation. Harvard Law School has created a “Harvard Negotiation Project and developed a framework to help people prepare effectively for negotiation. They describe the seven elements framework as the essential’s tools needed to identify your goals, prepare effectively, minimize surprises, and take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
-
Interests. Interests are “the fundamental drivers of negotiation,” according to Patton—our basic needs, wants, and motivations. Often hidden and unspoken, our interests nonetheless guide what we do and say.
-
Legitimacy. The quest for a legitimate, or fair, deal drives many of our decisions in negotiations.
-
Relationships. Whether you have an ongoing connection with a counterpart or don’t think you’ll ever see her again, you need to effectively manage your relationship as your negotiation unfolds.
-
Alternatives and BATNA. Even as we take part in negotiations, we are aware of our alternatives away from the table—what we will do if the current deal doesn’t pan out. Negotiation preparation should include an analysis of your BATNA, or best alternative to a negotiated agreement, according to Getting to Yes.
-
Options. In negotiations, options refer to any available choice’s parties might consider to satisfy their interests, including conditions, contingencies, and trades.
-
Commitments. In negotiations, a commitment can be defined as an agreement, demand, offer, or promise made by one or more party.
-
Communication. Whether you are negotiating online, via phone, or in person, you will take part in a communication process with the other party or parties. The success of your negotiation can hinge on your communication choices
Just studying these 7 elements of negotiation and understanding the building blocks and make you more prepared, comfortable and competent.
