HOLIDAY GREETINGS

FROM KBA'S BOARD CHAIRMAN

"It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve as Chair of the Kentucky Broadcasters Association. I’m excited about broadcasting’s future and how the KBA can make it even brighter. One thing we must do is realize where our biggest competition is coming from. It may surprise you, but it isn’t the other radio or tv stations. Frankly, besides the person in the mirror, our largest competitor is big tech. We must find new innovative ways to keep up and surpass them. With our content, we can be in the driver’s seat to make sure we not only secure the future, but we enhance it. I look forward to working with all of you. I wish each of you, your families, and friends a wonderful holiday season!"

CHANGING OF THE GUARD @ WTVQ

ALDRIDGE DEPARTS, MOSSMAN NAMED NEW GM

Long time WTVQ-TV, Lexington general manager Chris Aldridge announced his resignation and retirement from the station last week. Chris’s total tenure as WTVQ general manager exceeded twenty-three years.

Chris first came to WTVQ in January 1992, when Park Communications purchased the property, and promoted him from their Chattanooga, Tennessee television station. He later worked under Media General ownership, and first left WTVQ in November 1999. He returned to the station in June 2008, shortly after WTVQ was purchased by its current owner, Morris Multimedia.

Chris was the second longest tenured general manager in the history of the Lexington television market, trailing only the legendary Harry Barfield at WLEX, and slightly longer than WKYT icon, Ralph Gabbard.

Chris’s broadcast career also included stops in: Greensboro, North Carolina; Tallahassee, Florida; Charleston-Huntington, West Virginia, as-well-as Chattanooga.

He was away from television for a few years while he was President/CEO of Forcht Broadcasting. For three years prior to returning to WTVQ, Chris served a dual role as general manager of The Lane Report, Kentucky’s premier business news magazine, while running his own consulting business working with television and radio stations across the country on various projects.

Chris is a former board member and chair of the Kentucky Broadcasters Association and will continue to serve as a KBA Ambassador. In 2018, Chris received the KBA’s highest honor, the Kentucky Mic Hall of Fame Award, recognizing his contributions to broadcasting in the Commonwealth.

While Chris says he is “retired” from television station management, he quickly adds that he is “not retired from life.” He says “Broadcasting is in my blood, and I never intend to be far removed from it. I have other interests that I want to pursue for my final act before I fully retire.”

Please join the KBA staff and board of directors in wishing Chris best wishes on the next chapter of his life.

WTVQ/ABC36 is pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Mossman as their new General Manager, succeeding a retiring Chris Aldridge. Mossman returns to the Bluegrass, having previously served as the General Manager of WKYT, and brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in the broadcasting industry.

“I love Lexington and I’m fired up to be coming back,” said Mossman, who assumes his new duties immediately. “We’ve got some great people on the team and we’re going to have some fun.”

With a celebrated career of over 30 years, Mossman has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, strategic vision, and a passion for delivering quality content to viewers.

“When you have an opportunity to bring back a proven winner to a town he and his family loved, you do it,” said Bobby Berry, Chief Operating Officer of Morris Multimedia’s broadcast division. “Chris’s desire to return to Lexington and lead WTVQ is a slam dunk. We are excited for the direction WTVQ is going.”

THIS WEEKS MEMBER PIC

"THAT THERE IS AN R.V."

Brian and Trisha, the Quicksie Morning Show Team, had big plans for this year's Light Up E-town Parade! A throwback to the "Christmas Vacation" movie. All was great until the RV they borrowed wouldn't start right before the parade. What would Cousin Eddie do, you might ask? Easy, you have it towed... literally towed in the parade.

HAVE YOU GIVEN UP?

Yesterday was the final session of our Leadership MasterClass for 2023.  It’s an incredible program that allows us to work alongside leaders for seven weeks. We get to know them and discuss challenges, successes, and things we want to accomplish.

This week, we asked about goals they accomplished in 2023 and one thing they want to achieve in 2024.  One participant shared that she, for the first time, had written down her four most important goals, and as a result of writing them down, she was able to review and focus on them quarterly to ensure that she was on track to accomplish them. There’s probably a sales tip right there.  Others talked about learning, professional development, reading, and gaining new knowledge.

Surprisingly, that’s not normal.  Seymour Popert, a computer scientist, wrote the book Mindstorms: Children, Computers, And Powerful Ideas. Popert shares some startling news about how many approach learning:

“An unknown but certainly significant proportion of the population has almost completely given up on learning. These people seldom, if ever engage in deliberate learning and see themselves as neither competent at it nor likely to enjoy it. The social and personal cost is enormous.

Although negative self-images can be overcome, in the life of an individual they are extremely robust and powerfully self-reinforcing. Deficiency becomes identity: "I can't learn French, I don't have an ear for languages;" "I could never be a businessman, I don't have a head for figures;"...

If people believe firmly enough that they cannot do math, they will usually succeed in preventing themselves from doing whatever they recognize as math. The consequence of such self-sabotage is personal failure, and each failure reinforces the original belief. And such beliefs may be most insidious when held not only by individuals but by our entire culture."

This time of year is an excellent time for reflection and planning.  Did you accomplish what you wanted to achieve in 2023?  What do you know today that you didn’t know last year?  What are some challenges that you were able to overcome through learning new things?  As you plan 2024, the same questions can be utilized to create your vision for 2024. If you choose to engage in this reflection and planning, take the advice of our Leadership MasterClass student, who said, “Writing them down and reviewing made the difference between success and failure.”
