ECONOMIC IMPACT OF RADIO & TV

NEW WOODS & POOLE STUDY RELEASED

The local commercial broadcast television and radio industry generates $1.23 trillion of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 2.52 million jobs through direct and stimulative effect on the American economy, found a new study by Woods & Poole Economics with support from BIA Advisory Services.

The analysis examines broadcasting’s impact on the economy through direct employment, its ripple effect on other industries and as an advertising medium for messaging consumers. Radio and television stations’ influence on the national economy, as well as information by state, is provided in the study.

The Copyright Royalty Board on Friday published in the Federal Register a call for interested parties to file Petitions to Participate in the proceeding to set the royalty rates to be paid by webcasters (including broadcasters who simulcast their programming through internet-delivered channels) in the period 2026-2030. These royalties are paid by webcasters to SoundExchange for the noninteractive streaming of sound recordings. The CRB is required to review these rates every five years. These proceedings are lengthy and include extensive discovery and a trial-like hearing to determine what royalty a “willing buyer and a willing seller” would agree to in a marketplace transaction. Because of the complexity of the process, the CRB starts the proceeding early in the year before the year in which the current royalty rate expires. So, as the current rates expire at the end of 2025, parties will need to sign up to participate in the proceeding to determine 2026-2030 rates by February 6, 2024 by filing a Petition to Participate. The Petition must describe the party’s interest in the proceeding and be accompanied by a filing fee of $150. The Federal Register notice provides other procedural details for filing these Petitions. MEDIA HABITS OF STREAMERS

Brian Allers, Senior Vice President, TVB

It is no secret that streaming platforms have become a popular way to view content. However, there are questions about who is watching which services, whether these services have advertising, and whether these streaming viewers also view linear TV.

The 2023 SVOD study, a brand-new 4,000-respondent survey implemented by the well-regarded research company GFK and commissioned by TVB, attempts to better understand this vast world of streaming and how linear television, more specifically, local broadcast TV fits in it. Key findings from this study help advertising decision makers better understand the media landscape and showcase the value linear TV continues to have for advertisers.

SELLING ON PURPOSE

As a young new seller (see pic below-left), I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I was totally money-motivated.  The thought of earning whatever I wanted, making lots of money on commission, and what I could buy with that money was appealing enough to jump from being on the air over to the “dark side” J and go into sales.

Then it happened… While attending a Don Beveridge seminar, I had an epiphany.

Don Beveridge was an early influencer in my career.  I attended many of his seminars and had the pleasure of having many conversations with Don.  Early in your career, having a guide that can point you in the right direction is helpful. The epiphany happened when Don spoke these words:

“I will not ask for your business unless I can first come up with a plan for improving it.”

There it was – a purpose for doing what we do.  I want to improve businesses, help them grow and reach their potential, and derive the satisfaction of knowing my help and advice had a part in their success.  Indeed, an “ah-ha” moment set the course for a successful sales career.

A couple of weeks ago, we held our final Sales Essentials one-day training session, and one of the key takeaways we always hear about is when we share the Don Beveridge quote.  Knowing why you are doing this and what the purpose is can be a powerful motivator.

As we begin the new year, we encourage you to pause and reflect on why you do what you do. What’s your purpose?  Your purpose will lead to passion, and passion will lead to many great opportunities for you.

As marketing and sales professionals, we are uniquely positioned to be on the front lines of economic success and prosperity in our markets.  We put buyers and sellers together with our communication platforms and resources and provide the fuel for the economic engine. In today’s business environment, our work is more important than ever.

Thinking of that as my purpose for selling advertising is inspiring to me.  How about you?
