BROADCASTERS FOUNDATION

ANNUAL "GIVING DAY" IS TODAY

The Broadcasters Foundation of America annual Giving Day is taking place today! The campaign’s purpose is to raise money to support the Foundation’s sole mission of providing financial assistance to radio and television professionals who find themselves in acute need due to critical illness or disaster. The campaign also strives to raise awareness of the Broadcasters Foundation’s charitable purpose to ensure that anyone in radio and television who might qualify for aid can apply.

“One hundred percent of Giving Day donations go directly to grants that help our colleagues, who are struggling with life-altering disease or disaster,” said Tim McCarthy, President of the Broadcasters Foundation. “Any amount -- large or small -- helps provide much-needed aid to support our colleagues.”

“Support for the Broadcasters Foundation of America comes directly from within our broadcasting community,” noted Scott Herman, Chair of the Broadcasters Foundation. “I ask everyone in radio and television to consider donating, in any amount, to help those in our business who need it most.”

The Broadcasters Foundation has distributed more than $15 million dollars in aid over the past 20 years. Monthly grants support broadcasters on a continual basis while they recover from an illness or accident. Emergency grants provide one-time financial aid following a devastating natural disaster or home emergency.

More information about the Broadcasters Foundation, including how to make a donation or apply for aid, is available at www.broadcastersfoundation.org, 212-373-8250, or info@thebfoa.org.

HERO FOR THE HOME

Earlier this week, WDRB meteorologist Jude Redfield was named Home of the Innocents 2024 Hero for the Home, after his dedication and compassion to the record year of Jude's Jingle Tree. Jude found the biggest and prettiest tree from Robert's Family Farm and filled it with ornaments from viewers that poured into the newsroom, each of them with a special story. In December, WDRB Mornings presented a check to Home of the Innocents for $105,000, a record amount.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

When my daughter Breanna was very young, her mother and I started a tradition called “Surprise Monday.” We did this because it seems the world hates Monday, and we wanted our daughter not to be brought down by the negativity.  Surprise Monday could have been as simple as a new pencil or a coloring book.  It wasn’t so much about the item but the expectation.  Having her look forward to Monday was the goal.  To this day, Bree loves Monday and continues the tradition with her daughters.

The word expectation comes from the Latin expectationem, meaning "an awaiting." If you have great expectations, you think something good will come your way, but if you keep your expectations low, you won't risk being disappointed.

Expectations are more than fleeing thoughts; they are based on your deeper beliefs.  What do you believe you deserve?  Do you think you deserve to be successful?  Do you believe you deserve to have nice things? Do you believe in being nice to people and treating them with kindness?  Do you believe others do the same? Your beliefs form your expectations, and your expectations become your reality.

“That client will never buy.”

“I can’t ask them to spend that much; they’ll get mad”

“Another cancellation, this always happens to me”

“That person is always rude”

Those are all belief’s that are expressed as expectations.

One of the greatest gifts my mentor Bill Mann ever gave me was to enroll me in a program with Lou Tice of the Pacific Institute.  Lou is no longer with us, but his groundbreaking work on the power of ensuring your beliefs and your expectations are consistent with what you want to accomplish lives on. (I still have my cassette case box and Bill and I still quote Lou) You don’t get what you want in life, you get what you expect.  And your expectations come from your beliefs.

Bill told me very early in my career, “Jeffrey, there isn’t a problem you can’t overcome, a challenge you can’t get past.  The biggest obstacle you will face in your career is the noise between your ears.”  Bill believed in me and challenged me to control my self-talk.

Depending on the research you read, we have as many as hundreds of conversations with ourselves each day.  You’re no doubt having one right now as a result of reading this.  Are you saying to yourself, “I can never do this,” or are you saying, “Yes, I’m in control of my self-talk.”

The choice is yours.
