Tomorrow, December 1st, is the filing deadline for Biennial Ownership Reports by all licensees of commercial and noncommercial full-power TV/AM/FM stations, Class A TV stations, and LPTV stations. The reports must reflect station ownership as of October 1, 2023 (see our article here on the FCC’s recent reminder about these reports). The FCC has been pushing for stations to fill these out completely and accurately by the deadline (see this reminder issued by the FCC last week), as the Commission uses these reports to get a snapshot of who owns and controls what broadcast stations, including information about the race and gender of station owners and their other broadcast interests (see our article from 2021 about the importance the FCC attaches to these filings).

SYMPATHY EXTENDED

KURT DAVID PASSES AWAY

KBA mourns the passing of long time radio personality, Kurt David Engelhardt, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 71.

Known as “Kurt David”, he rocked the radio airways across Kentucky from the age of 16 until his death. Most recently known for his show ‘Takin’ Ya Back’ which broadcasts locally on Great Oldies 99.1 WCBL and internationally on multiple social media platforms. After moving to Paducah in 1974, Kurt started working at WDXR, WKYX and then transitioned to WPSD for the next ten years. Kurt enjoyed helping with many aspects of the Lion’s Club Telethon for over a decade. He also worked as a DJ at WDDJ 97 FM and WZZL 105.5 FM in the 1990s. Kurt also owned his own production company, “Angelheart Productions”. He retired working from Murray State University in 2019. Kurt loved all music genres, UK Basketball and the Boston Celtics.

LEGISLATIVE REPORTS

FREE FOR STATIONS DURING THE UPCOMING SESSION

The Kentucky Legislative Research Commission Public Information Office reminds KBA member stations of complimentary daily updates during the regular session. The office provides audio, video, press releases and photos.

To sign up for the daily updates, send your station news contact, call letters and city to Keith Krey.

EAS UPDATE

SAGE ALERTING GRANTED EXTENSION

Earlier this month, the NAB and low-power FM advocate REC Networks, in a joint letter to the FCC, requested more time for broadcasters to install the firmware update by the compliance deadline.

This week, the FCC granted the petition and issued a 90 day extension of time for stations to update their EAS firmware. But, there's a catch. The extension is ONLY for users of the Sage Alerting Systems EAS endecs.

Everyone else must still meet the December 12, 2023 deadline.

THIS WEEKS MEMBER PIC

PACKING THE LOBBY

Earlier this week WKYT-TV in Lexington held their annual "Pack the Lobby" charity fundraiser. The station collected a lobby full of toys and gifts for children this Christmas. The station partnered with Mission of Hope, a ministry that provides essential resources for students and families living with poverty across rural Appalachia.

THIS CAN'T POSSIBLY BE...

In researching sales effectiveness, we’ve uncovered statistics that, depending on the study, the average salesperson spends only between 33% and 37% of their time selling. Shocking, and not in a good way…

Here’s another startling statistic:  61.3% of sales reps report they have some time management system or tool. However, only 23% say they actually follow it.  That means over 70% of sales reps do not use any Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool or time management software.

Shameless plug:  The RAB Account Manager is a comprehensive tool built by broadcasters for broadcasters. Click on the name for a demo and more information on how this tool can get you out of the 70% who simply react to events in their day.

In his book The Ultimate Sales Machine, author Chet Holmes says, “Building a sales machine is not going to be about doing 4,000 things; it’s going to be about doing 12 things 4,000 times each.”  Holmes asserts that time management is the most crucial skill in successful selling.  He offers six steps to excellent time management:

  1. Touch it once – if you touch it, take action, don’t revisit.  Revisiting things you have already touched can waste 97 hours per year.
  2. Make lists – Lists help you stay focused on high priorities
  3. Plan how much time it will take – Don’t think about when you’ll do each task yet, just determine how much time it will take.
  4. Plan the day – Now that you have allocated the time for each task, plan specific time slots for everything.
  5. Prioritize – put the most important tasks first.
  6. Throw it away – Studies show that 80% of all filed or stored information will never be referred to again. Physical clutter is a distraction and takes up mental space.

The evidence is clear: great salespeople who actively manage their time spend almost 20% more time selling than a seller who reacts to daily activities.

You’ve heard the saying, “Time is money.” Nowhere is this more true than our ability to manage our time effectively to prioritize more time in front of clients, helping them solve their problems. It’s so essential that Holmes asserts that if you can’t get time management right, you can’t get anything right.

I’m going to double down on the six steps. How about you?
