URGENT: DEADLINE TODAY

IF YOU SELL BLOCK TIME, PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!

This is a reminder that by the end of today, all broadcasters are supposed to have written certifications from any buyer of program time on their stations that the buyer is not a foreign government or an agent of a foreign government, and has not been paid by a foreign government to produce the programming placed on the station. So if, for instance, you sell program time to a church or real estate agency or foreign programmer or to anyone else, you need to get a certification that they are not a foreign government or the representative of such a government. If they are associated with a foreign government, then enhanced on-air sponsorship identification is required, and foreign government-backed programming also triggers public file disclosure obligations.  READ MORE

POLITICALLY SPEAKING...

KBA PROVIDES FORMS FOR POLITICAL SEASON

Keeping track of the information necessary to comply with FCC rules on political advertising is not an easy task. The FCC in recent years has been aggressive in policing political broadcasting rule violations, particularly those involving the public file requirements. It is therefore important that broadcasters fully understand their obligations.

To assist you through the maze of political record keeping, the KBA has partnered with the legal team at Wilkinson Barker Knauer, LLP, to provide the following forms, which are to be used as a starting point for collecting and organizing the information that you need to comply with these rules. These forms also come with a checklist of actions that stations should take to help track their political file compliance.

WHAT REALLY IS EXPECTED OF RADIO & TV STATIONS

The FCC requires every applicant, permittee, or licensee of a full-power AM, FM, or TV station or of a Class A TV station to maintain a Public Inspection File. For decades, the FCC required that these files be kept at a station’s main studio in paper or electronic form. Starting in 2012, the FCC began to “modernize” the broadcast disclosure rules by requiring station licensees to make Public Inspection File information available online in a Commission-hosted database.

Given recent changes and the normalization of online Public Files, we did a top to bottom rewrite of our Public Inspection File advisory. It covers both commercial and noncommercial station requirements.

JEFF SCHMIDT'S SALES TIP OF THE WEEK

RECENCY OF EXPERIENCE

Geoff is one of my best life-long friends. He’s also a corporate pilot. Last week he told me he had just finished five days of school. “School? What are you going to school for you’ve been doing this for 35 years?” I asked in my most “supportive” yet inquisitive tone. He told me they were changing the airplane he files from the Challenger to the Gulf Stream G550 and he had to go back to school to relearn the Gulfstream. Geoff had flown the G5 before, but because it has been 6 years, he was required to go back to school and get his recency of experience.

Isn’t it comforting to know that pilots are required to maintain their experience and training? Similarly, doctors, lawyers, and many other professions are required to have continuing education as part of their careers and licenses.

Sadly, this is not true in sales. There is no law requirement for ongoing training...

In Search of Learning Agility was a multiyear study done by the TR Clark Company. It was sponsored by the American Society of Training Development. The report is a comprehensive look at adult education and on-the-job competency.

According to In Search of Learning Agility, “There is no such thing as permanent competence or a fully developed skill set in either individuals or organizations.”

Here are four things ongoing training will do for you:

  1. Build your confidence. The more proficient and competent you become at something the more confidence you have in your ability.
  2. Creates a better work environment. People who are invested in doing and becoming their best build on each other. This creates a team spirit, improves morale, and job satisfaction.
  3. Boosts careers. By consistently learning you not only enhance your job security; you avail yourself to promotions, increases, and greater responsibility. All because you are constantly growing.
  4. Personal satisfaction. For the reasons I listed and many others, continually training in your field will make a major difference in your life. You will enjoy increased intellectual stimulation, and satisfaction, and find greater reward in all that you do.

I’m sure the passengers on the G5 that Geoff will be flying next week will appreciate that he went back to school and spent a week in the classroom and the simulator to relearn how to fly the plane safely and effectively.

The marketing world we operate in changes daily.  What do you want to learn this week?
