THE WOMEN OF KBA

CELEBRATING WOMENS DAY & WOMENS HISTORY MONTH

On International Women's Day, I reflected on the incredible Kentucky broadcast women who have influenced my career over the years. Watching Nancy Cox, Sue Wylie, Barbara Bailey and Melissa Swan. Being inspired by Julie Talbot, Renee Shaw, Connie Joiner and Deborah Claypool. Hearing stories about Ann Thomas McMakin, Lucille Smith, Mae Hoover and Virginia Fox. I have had the pleasure to work alongside Betty Gayle, Barb Smith, Vickie Newberry and Sue Brady. I have learned a lot from station owners like Dana Withers, Kristin Cantrell and Beth Mann. My first board chair in this role as KBA President was chairwoman Marti Hazel, who believed in me and gave me a chance. And I wouldn't be where I am today without Ann Anderson giving me my first broadcast job in 1991, simply because I could type 80 words per minute.

I am also blessed to be surrounded by many amazing women (pictured above and more below) who currently serve KBA in various capacities. From current board members, Ambassadors, associates and committee members to our dedicated staff, who push me to be better every single day.

On behalf of the Kentucky Broadcasters Association, we celebrate and honor all women in the broadcast industry, both past and present, for their determination to inspire a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination.

-Chris Winkle, KBA President & CEO

Julie Milam - Chair Elect

Julie was raised in Nashville, TN and grew up in the music business. After working in Marketing and Promotions for Warner Brothers, Atlantic, Elektra and Mercury Records, Julie came to Bowling Green in 2004 as the small business owner of Pool & Spa Depot. After growing her business by using local media, she decided to join the WNKY News 40 team, so she could help grow other small businesses all well.

After 16 years at WNKY, Julie is proud to lead her staff of 60+ employees as WNKY's General Manager. She hosts Marquee Backstage, a behind-the-scenes music documentary, which airs on television every weekend in 8 states, and she anchors a weekly segment on NBC and CBS called "Community Driven". She takes the role of public servant to heart and volunteers for area nonprofits every chance she gets. #becauselocalmatters

With Larry Wilkins

Director of Engineering Services, Alabama Broadcasters Association

The Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP) was created several years ago as a joint project between the FCC and State Broadcasters Associations. An ABIP inspector will visit your station to review various items to aid the station in becoming and maintaining compliance with the latest FCC Rules and Regulations. In this session we will cover each of the items that the alternative inspector will be looking at and offer advice on correcting any areas that need attention.

NAB LAUNCHES NEW RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN

The NAB and the NAB Leadership Foundation are launching a multifaceted campaign to help broadcasters find and grow talent for their stations. “You Belong Here” spotlights the many career possibilities in broadcasting and how job seekers can make a difference.

What is it? “You Belong Here” showcases how job seekers can use their skills and find their passion in local television and radio stations in every town and city across the country. The campaign website also promotes thousands of jobs in broadcast media.

Make it work for you: NAB is providing tools for stations to educate, recruit and grow talent, including a :30 spec spot and long-form video. Utilize these tools to reach job seekers:

  • Customize the :30 spec spot with shots/audio of your talent and community. Air this as often as possible.
  • Embed the social video on your website or pin it on your social channels.
  • Put a callout on your website to the You Belong Here page.
  • Each week, post a social tile encouraging your followers to learn more about careers in broadcasting.
  • Share the long-form video during class presentations or career fairs.

Go deeper: Visit YouBelongHere.media/toolkit for more tips and tools for amplifying how working in broadcast media is a fun and rewarding way to put your skills to work and grow your career.

The takeaway: There has never been a more exciting time to be in broadcasting. Not only will you have a front row seat to history – you will make a difference in your community.

HOW LONG WILL THIS LAST?

Ask most people what the first word that comes to mind when you say salesperson, and you will have no trouble understanding why our profession can sometimes feel so difficult.  Words like slimy, sleazy, pushy, aggressive, and liar top the list.  This is disconcerting and frustrating.  We can and must do better at building the reputation of what it means to be a salesperson.

This week, I heard from one of my Kentucky readers, John Roberts, CEO of an advertising agency, Creative Media of Kentucky.  John was responding to the story we shared from CES, where a seller would not acknowledge, let alone recommend we visit one of his competitors.  John writes:

“Great article! Now, sitting in “agency land,” we hear daily from stations, no matter what the media, Do you have a buy? Why was MY budget cut? Etc. NEVER about the client on whether they were selling widgets or how they have improved the stations’ format.

Not a good look surveying the playing field, as the Me, Me, Me’s outweighing the “Here’s an idea that I think will help the client” salesmen.”

Sadly, John’s perception is the reality for many media buyers.  In a recent blog by marketing guru Seth Godin, he lays out eight marketing maxims. I’ll save you the trouble of looking it up – a maxim is a short, pithy statement expressing a general truth or rule of conduct. Here are Seth’s eight maxims:

  1. Trust is worth more than attention.
  2. Helping people get to where they seek to go is more effective than hustling people to persuade them to go where you’re going.
  3. Choose your customers, choose your future.
  4. Tell ten people. If they don’t tell the others, make a better product.
  5. Creating the conditions for the word to spread is the job of the marketer.
  6. Customer service is free.
  7. “You’ll pay a lot but get more than you paid for” is a useful motto.
  8. Act like people are watching. They are.

During our Radio Sales Essentials class, we take a back-to-basics approach to the RAB Seve-Steps To Selling Success.  This system is rooted in trust, focus, and serving the customer.  One of our mantras is: “To Identify and then satisfy the customer needs, profitably, from the customer’s point of view.” We encourage people to stop selling and start serving.  If you focus on your customers' needs and solve their problems, your problems will fade away.

Sales is a repeatable process.  If you follow the recipe in the order and sequence, with the right mindset, anything is possible.
