RADIO TALENT INSTITUTE

APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED

The Kentucky Broadcasters Association is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2024 KBA Radio Talent Institute, to be held at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. The Institute creates opportunities for new and emerging careers in media. It is truly an incubator of well-rounded, well-educated college students, or recent graduates with a passion for media and a determination to get into the business.

The National Radio Talent System is made up of multiple talent Institutes at colleges and universities throughout the United States. Each institute brings in industry professionals from around the country as Guest Speakers who bring their real-world knowledge to this intensive 6-day summer program.

The KBA Radio Talent Institute at WKU is the campus-to-career connection most students need to begin their broadcast career, each not only learning from the dozens of pros but are able to network with them individually. This proves invaluable, as most will otherwise never have such an opportunity to meet and speak with these professionals. Likewise, these pros already have an introduction to these students who are available for open positions.

Upon completion of the institute, students will further their networking opportunities with access the National Radio Talent System's Career Center. This is where those in the industry are able to discover and hire NRTS graduates, who very likely, will be tomorrow's industry leaders.

POLITICAL WEBINAR

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH @ 1:00PM EASTERN

With the 2023 election behind us, it's time to turn our attention to the 2024 political season, which has already started. 2024 is projected to be the biggest year ever for political advertising. We are already seeing many ads for candidates and we are also seeing an equal amount of disputes over the content of those ads. Are you up to date on all the FCC rules that govern your sale of political ads? Do you know who you must sell political ads to, the rates that you can charge, and all the paperwork that is required – including the latest on the online political file?

On November 29th, the staff of the FCC’s Office of Political Programming – Bobby Baker, Gary Schonman and Sima Nilsson – will be on hand, in a webinar moderated by David Oxenford of the DC law firm Wilkinson Barker Knauer LLP, to provide a refresher on the rules that you need to know to prepare for the 2024 election season, and to highlight the potential issues that may arise with political candidates and issue advertisers on your stations. Be sure that you avoid any of the problems that can arise in your sale of political advertising in 2024 by signing up for this timely webinar.

THIS WEEKS MEMBER PIC

GIVING THANKS

With so much to be thankful for, WYMT held its annual Thanksgiving luncheon with family, friends, and former colleagues. Great food and fellowship was enjoyed by all who attended.

We want to promote YOU! Send us your staff additions, promotions and special events. Email Chris at chris@kba.org

THEY SAY IT - BUT DO THEY MEAN IT?

A few weeks ago, we shared a conversation with a manager who said: “We have lots of proposals out there, but we aren’t getting much response.” The advice we shared was somewhat harsh, but knowing the manager, we knew he was up for the challenge.  We said: “If clients aren’t interested in your proposals, maybe your proposals aren’t that interesting.”  He took it well and reviewed what they could do to improve.

That sparked some great feedback from others, including the “Princess” Debra Carpenter, who recently sent us this great feedback for how she uniquely used that advice to get a prospect to answer her emails finally.  Here’s what Debra shared:

I took that “be interesting” message to heart and emailed an agency with a client I've been chasing for one year and a half!

My subject line was: Are you still there?

In the email, I said:

Hey Michael!

I'm thinking I'm not that interesting.......so you have chosen not to read my emails.

Is that the case?

Debra

I received a response almost immediately:

Best. Email. Of. The. Week.

Let's talk next week! I'll explain. Look forward to speaking.

He answered my call the following week, and we met virtually. He's already included our station in 2024's budget for one of his clients and is looking to add another one.

I know it wasn't EXACTLY what you recommended to do......but because of the person's sense of humor, I knew it would either be a home run, or I could cut him loose!

Congratulations, Debra, on getting the client's attention, getting the appointment, and making the sale!  It doesn’t get much better than that.

If you’re having trouble getting prospects to respond or clients to make decisions, maybe it’s time to get creative and possibly even a tad outlandish, respectfully, of course.

When we discuss prospecting in our Sales Essentials Class (the next class is December 5th; sign up here), we say you must be DIFFERENT and BETTER.  This is because small and medium-sized businesses are bombarded by nearly 40 media reps monthly. If you’re like Debra and have a story about something creative you’ve done to get attention lately, we’d love to share it.  We have the best members/readers in the world.

Jeff Schmidt is the SVP of Professional Development at the Radio Advertising Bureau. You can also connect with him by email JSchmidt@rab.com or on Twitter and LinkedIn.

Your active KBA membership entitles you to complimentary access to RAB's online certifications.
