Dear Breastfeeding Advocates,

It is an honor and a joy to write to you as Chair of the Board of the KBC! Many years ago, when the KBC first came on my radar, I could not imagine even serving on the board of the KBC. The board members seemed like these very smart, important people with a ton of experience, and that was certainly not me. And yet now look who is here! Look who is here having one of the best times of her life serving you? This little black woman from Southwest Kansas, who has not birthed or breastfed any children herself, that is who!

As this is my first letter to you, I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. Actually, if I am honest, I am just showing more of my humanity because most of us like to talk about ourselves. Either way, you now know I live in Southwest Kansas but that is not where I was born. My life journey has taken me from Uganda, to Kenya to Minnesota to Missouri and then to Kansas. I have lived in places where breast milk is what most babies are fed, and I have lived where parents and the environment do better with support from all of us, in order to make human milk feeding the easy choice.

And to me, that is one of the miracles of supporting the feeding of human milk to human babies: all of us can be advocates. Any of us can be involved in some way. Were you ever a baby? Do you have or did you ever have parents? Then you qualify to do this wonderful thing that you are doing right now which is to support breastfeeding today for a healthier Kansas tomorrow 😊

I am super excited to be on this journey with all of you. I am looking forward to a wonderful year – October 2022 to October 2023 – and the adventures we will experience. I am thankful for each of you. May you get safely through this last part of the calendar year and peacefully into the next year.

I still almost cannot believe I get to be Chair of the Board of the KBC! Pinch me because I thought only super cool people get to serve on this Board!

Till next time! See you online and in person!

Warmly,

Susan Lukwago

NATIONAL

USBC has released an Online Workplace Guide

The Global Breastfeeding Scorecard has been updated. It examines performance on critical indicators of the seven policy priorities identified by the Global Breastfeeding Collective at the national and global levels. Each action has 1-2 progress indicators and targets – to be met by 2030 – which serve as a call for action for policymakers worldwide to make breastfeeding support a collective national priority. NEW Site for Breastfeeding Employees

The Department of Labor released an informational webpage on the rights of nursing employees. The webpage highlights protections available under the Break Time for Nursing Mothers law, which protects the right to take breaks at work to express milk, and includes resources and sources of help for employees with questions.

4th Trimester Project

NewMomHealth.com

4th Trimester Project is a resource designed to support birthing persons and families after birth. The website includes the latest medical evidence on a wide variety of postpartum care subjects and real, honest stories from moms to aid in postpartum planning. The site includes information, videos, and tools to assist new mothers and families with building their village of support, learning self-care, recovery, and creating a plan after birth. Baby care information and links to join a social network are also available. There is a section that contains extensive, evidence-based information for providers.

A new Maternity Care Deserts Dashboard from March of Dimes shows 48.6% of Kansas is considered a Maternity Desert compared to 35.6% of the US.

The KBC recently signed The Pregnant Scholar’s letter with comments in support of the U.S. Department of Education's proposed new Title IX regulations for schools, colleges, and other educational institutions. These new regulations will, for the first time ever, recognize lactation as a pregnancy-related condition and set requirements for lactation break time, space, and other accommodations.
