KC Shepherd's Center Celebrates 50 Years of Service
A community is like a symphony, with each member a vital instrument to be seen, heard, and respected. Yet, the voices of older adults are often ignored, and loneliness and isolation can silence their greater potential. Now’s the time for compassion and connection, to see the often unseen, and to better serve our underserved.

Guided by a belief that social engagement is not a luxury but a basic human need, for 50 years KC Shepherd’s Center has been dedicated to serving older adults across the greater Kansas City area, providing comfort and companionship to fill the gaps in our communities. Offered by seniors, for seniors, our peer-to-peer programs increase social engagement, reduce food insecurity and provide peace of mind for older adults and those who love them. We go beyond just providing a service, and instead, work to build lasting relationships and opportunities for more purposeful living.
At KC Shepherd’s Center, we impact lives through service. We believe love is being there and giving back to the generations that came before us. We know our community is strongest when everyone is given the chance to contribute, and we believe aging well should be done with dignity, choice, and friendship—but never alone. Because when we make our community whole – when everyone’s voice is heard – we empower us all. Here's to the next 50 years!
From the Desk of the Executive Director
The pandemic created many opportunities for KC Shepherd's Center to answer the call to keep older adults safe, fed, and less isolated. The KCSC Meals on Wheels program has grown by 1300% since pre-pandemic, serving 108,710 meals in 93 zip codes to 880 older adults in 2021 alone. KCSC does not want to leave one older adult isolated and/or food insecure, so it has answered the call time and time again creating a Phone Pal program during the shutdown which allowed people to sign up to call an older adult weekly or sometimes daily to visit with them during the shutdown. Today the program continues to grow.
Also during the pandemic, KCSC began offering our Adventures in Learning Classes virtually so that they could reach a wider audience while keeping them safe. Our participants literally traveled around the world through music, theatre tours, and zoo visits while in the safety of their own living rooms. KCSC also collaborated with the KCFD, University Health, and KC Hospice to provide COVID-19 testing sites and to date have given 281 vaccines to our community and homebound adults who were not being served and still signing people up for boosters today.
We distributed 7,484 'I am Vaccinated' Bracelets to people in 22 states as the story of our bracelets went viral and appeared in newscasts all over the country. KC Shepherd's Center has truly been a lifeline to the nearly 3,000 older adults served last year through innovative and creative programming, often pivoting on a dime to make necessary changes to ensure the safety of our clients thanks to our dedicated staff that has grown from 7-18 to keep pace with the exploding demand.

Join us in our mission to support, celebrate and empower older adults, fostering independence and connection.
Best Regards,

Janet Carlson Baker

Volunteer Program Highlight: Turner Construction Company
In honor of Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17, 2022) our friends at
Turner Construction Company called KCSC clients inquiring about their pet food and supply needs.

Two weeks later, volunteers from Turner Construction Company visited the KCSC campus to pack pet food and supplies for delivery to send out to our clients.

Thank you, Turner Construction for your dedication to helping others in the community!

Meet Our Care Management Team
Jennifer Moats and Tina Patterson are a dynamic duo that work together to provide a variety of services to our clients.

We sat down with Jennifer and Tina to learn more about their day-to-day and the work they do at KCSC.

In 2021, KCSC began building an integrated case management system of integrated lifecycle needs-driven programs and services – a continuum of care that meets the changing multi-faceted requirements of older adults as they age.

For clients, we provide individualized programs and services for purposeful aging. For community, we partner with programs in identifying those at risk and providing services to help them. And for systemic change, we advocate for policies that include the voices and the needs of older adults, and that recognize and erase the inequities that are contributing to poverty and its resulting vulnerabilities

Jennifer has been with KCSC since August of 2021. Jennifer states, "Through care management, we are able to serve those who are on a limited income as well as those who need community resources."

"We have about 70-80 clients that we work with throughout the year, and we offer them assistance with food, minor home repairs, clothing, auto repairs, etc."

In addition to this, the Care Management team also offers Medicare Counseling, a program Tina is very passionate about. Tina joined KCSC in July of 2021, and is working on getting her MSW from the University of Oklahoma, and will graduate in May of 2023.

Due to the complexity of Medicare, clients reach out to KCSC to assist with the Medicare process, by enrolling clients in Medicare, answering questions about different Medicare plans, or simply helping a client better understand their medical bills.

Tina states, "Medicare can be an intimidating process with a lot of elements and information, and I enjoy helping others navigate through the Medicare process and make the best choices for their needs." Tina also works toward one main goal: ensuring each client gets the most amount of coverage for the least amount of money.

"A big part of enjoying what you do is knowing you can make a difference, while also working with people you enjoy seeing every day. My co-workers share the same passion for helping older adults and celebrating them," says Tina.
