August 18, 2017 -  Friday Focus
Directors Corner

Hello KCC Families,

There was so much energy, conversations, and fun activities going on this week that the students almost forgot they were learning! Students and KCC SE staff has been working hard all week.  Please take time to rest and enjoy some down time. We will start back fresh on Monday.

As many of you know, we will be throwing our KCC 2017-18 Annual Back to School bash on August 19th at YMCA Camp Cristina. This event will be from 10 AM to 3 PM this Saturday and is considered one of our major fundraisers.   Please keep in mind that each family is required to participate in at least one major fundraiser each year.

Another exciting thing coming up is the Solar Eclipse on Monday.  We will have students remain inside from 1pm until pick-up and not have any outside activities including PE and Recess.  We will encourage professors to stream coverage of the eclipse as this is an experience that is once in a lifetime.

Dismissal on Monday will also be adjusted. You may choose to keep your child at home on Monday and their absence will be excused. Please let the front office and your child's teacher know if you plan to do so. Students that are in school may be picked up at the early release time, noon for elementary and 12:30pm for middle if you choose. Please communicate with your child's teacher so they will ready for the earlier pick-up.  Students that leave at the regular dismissal time will all remain inside. A staff member will be outside and call for them to be released.  Please be patient as our main goal is to keep everyone safe.

Please include the message from Hillsborough County below in the Friday Focus (cleaned up from the forward).

A special total solar eclipse is coming up this Monday, August 21. This eclipse is special because people can only see it from inside the United States of America. This is the first time that a special eclipse like this has happened since the USA became a country 241 years ago.

OPTIONS FOR PARENTS
SCHOOLS HAVE EXCITING EDUCATIONAL PLANS FOR THE ECLIPSE!
Many lessons will be indoors, and some will be outdoors. All outdoor eclipse lessons will use proper safety procedures. If you do not want your child to be a part of any outdoor eclipse plans, please let your school know in advance.
If you want your child to view the eclipse at home, you can pick them up early for a half-day or keep your child at home that day â€" it will be an excused absence with a note from a parent.
ALL AFTERSCHOOL ACTIVITES WILL BE INDOORS FROM 1:15-4:15
----------
IMPORTANT SAFETY: DON'T LOOK UP!
It is never safe to look right at the Sun, even during a partial eclipse! It can hurt your eyes in a way that even doctors cannot fix. If you want to watch this special eclipse, there are three safe ways:
ON TV AND ONLINE. You can watch video of the eclipse while it is happening on TV and on the Internet.
WITH SPECIAL GLASSES. If you have special eclipse glasses, you can look at the eclipse. But you cannot look at the eclipse with regular sunglasses or just your eyes.
WITH AN ECLIPSE VIEWER BOX. Learn how to make an eclipse viewer box at   sdhc.k12.fl.us  and search GO ECLIPSE
----------
Tampa times on August 21: Eclipse begins 1:18 p.m. Maximum point (81% of sun covered) 2:50 p.m.  Ends 4:14 p.m.
----------
For more information, see the flyer attached to this email or visit our district's eclipse webpage at   http://www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/doc/1994/eclipse

Volunteer Policy

In an effort to ensure parents take advantage of volunteer opportunities to fulfill the 20 hour volunteer commitment per enrolled child, please remember the following:

  • You must have filled out an online application at https://community.sdhc.k12.fl.us/wps/portal/community/sdhc.home/sdhc.communitywelcome.
  • Parents are responsible for coordinating their own volunteer opportunities. Many are regularly advertised, but parents can also schedule, at their convenience, a time and activity that best fits their schedules.
  • Parents are responsible for logging their own volunteer hours at their respective campus.
  • You can only log time for hours of actual participation or time spent purchasing/delivering supplies.
  • Hours cannot be "donated," but parents can arrange to have other family members, friends or other parents volunteer on their behalf. In this instance, it will be the responsibility of the volunteer to ensure hours are properly logged for the student family in which hours are intended to benefit.
  • Parents that earn more than 20 hours cannot retroactively assign extra hours to another family.

Parents can also review the Parent Volunteerism information in the Student Parent Handbook.

Board of Directors

Board of Directors Contacts :
President  - Sweta Patel  -   [email protected]

 AGENDA

- The Board agenda is set by the Board and is prepared, posted and distributed at least one (1) week before the meeting.  At any time before the meeting, a parent, guardian or a member of the Board can request to add an item to the agenda by contacting either the Secretary or the Board President.

The link for requesting an item to be added to the Board agenda is  http://apps.kidscc.org/view.php?id=51501 The final agenda is approved at the start of the Board meeting.  Parents and guardians are also allowed to introduce new items or concerns during the time of Floor Discussions and Announcements.  Although the Board may not comment on the items introduced at that time, they can decide to act on it in a future meeting.

PUBLIC COMMENT - The Board of Directors welcomes participation in meetings. The public is welcome to comment on matters appearing on the agenda at the time they are called. The public is also welcome to comment on matters, which are not on the agenda when the President calls for "Public Input for the Good of the District." This time is provided for the public to introduce any topic within the District's jurisdiction. Because these are non-agenda matters, generally no discussion or comment by the Board should be expected except to properly refer the matter for review as appropriate, but no action will be taken at this meeting. Public Comment will be limited to five minutes per speaker. If you wish to speak, please step up to the podium at the appropriate time & begin by stating your name & address.

CONSENT ITEMS - All items are approved by a single action. There will be no separate discussion of those items unless an item is removed at the request of any Director or member of the public. Those items removed will be considered at the end of the consent agenda or be placed on the action agenda for the next meeting.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND COMPLAINTS

The ultimate purpose of our internal complaint procedure is to encourage the healthy growth and development of Kid's Community College.  Conflict is often a part of any organization and may arise in any community. An effective process for resolving conflict is therefore both consistent with the vision and mission of KCC, and an essential component of the communication model that our school has adopted.  KCC recognizes that effective communication is paramount in effective conflict resolution and therefore strongly encourages students, parents, associates and the community to review and follow our conflict resolution process, which is found here:

KCC Conflict Resolution.
