Teri Tico and Lillian Ball - Organizers

Teresa “Teri” Tico has been an attorney on Kauaʻi since 1977, serving as Grand Jury Counsel, Kauaʻi Bar President, and Per Diem Judge in addition to her private practice. She is known for representing plaintiffs in precedent-setting environmental cases, including the landmark Pilaʻa Reef case that set a legal precedent for protection of coral reefs. Teri is a co-

founder of Save Our Seas, a nonprofit org dedicated to ocean protection, and has served as a director on non-profit boards including Legal Aid Society, YWCA, Hawaii Academy of Performing Arts, Hawaii Children’s Theater, Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, Native Hawaiian Legal Corp, and Ka ‘Imi Na‘auao O Hawai’i Nei. She produced the award-winning environmental docs Miss South Pacific, Fishing Pono, Poisoning Paradise, and The Shape of Things: The Dick Brewer Story. An avid sailor, windsurfer, and wingfoiler, Teri now enjoys more time on the water at Anini, Hanalei, and Hāʻena.

Lillian Ball, ecological artist and pro-activist, works primarily with water issues. A multidisciplinary background in anthropology, ethnographic film, and sculpture inform her internationally exhibited work and lecture practice. Awards include: Guggenheim Fellowship, NY Foundation for the Arts fellowships and a National Endowment for Arts Grant, with NYS Assembly citations. The ongoing WATERWASH® series combine native habitat restoration, and educational outreach with climate change adaptation.

Her film “Sanctuary” follows Venerable Metteyya, a charismatic young monk, saving Sarus cranes that inhabit Buddha’s birthplace in Nepal. Shot primarily on an iphone in this UNESCO sacred garden and in Kathmandu, the ultimately preserved wetlands are full of diverse wildlife. Ball lives on Kauai where she is filming inspiring local practitioners of native plants and culture for a new documentary.

An Askew Look at Kauai Happenings was inspired by the volunteer work of Kauai arts supporter Greg Askew, who, for a very long time, sent out his own What's Happenin' eblast. Greg and I (the other Greg) got together to combine his efforts into our Elsewhere on our Garden Isle. If you have a non-profit, non-political event you would like included, email me.
