A message to the community from our

President and CEO

Welcome to February! As we celebrate Black History Month, we acknowledge the important contributions of African Americans to Kern County and to society as a whole. In this edition, we also highlight Give Big Kern, an exciting annual event that brings our community together to support local nonprofits. Last year, local nonprofits raised over $885,000 and 1,000 volunteer hours through Give Big Kern. Please read on for details about this year’s online day of giving. We have also begun accepting scholarship applications—this year will be our strongest year yet for scholarships.

On a happy/sad note, we bid farewell to Cristina Camacho. Cristina recently left our staff to pursue a startup venture. Cristina's passion for helping others, attention to detail, and chipper demeanor have made lasting impacts on our organization and the community. We are grateful for all she has done and wish her success. Read on for more information about these stories and other exciting news from our foundation.

Kern Connected Community Network

We currently have 127 active organizations on the Kern Connected Community Network. These organizations range from behavioral health clinics, school districts and community based organizations. KCCN recently hosted it's first Community Advisor Group (CAG) meeting of the year. The purpose of the CAG meeting is to assist in building a strong, healthy, and effective network. During this meeting, KCCN also shared Kern County's Q4 data to view network performance highlights.

Bakersfield Youth Jobs Program City Hall Fellowship

Due to the success of the Bakersfield Youth Jobs Program (BYJP) City Hall Fellowship thus far, the City of Bakersfield requested seven more fellows to join the inaugural cohort which currently has 15 fellows participating for the last 6 months. BYJP also launched the nonprofit cohort which recruits current/former foster youth, justice-involved youth, and youth who have a disability. The BYJP team has begun placing interns across Bakersfield at local nonprofits for the nonprofit internship and we’re excited to continue finding intentional placements for all of our candidates. BYJP continues to build partnerships with local nonprofits and the team went out into the community to conduct site visits at each nonprofit to learn more about the unique opportunities that each one can offer.

BYJP released the Nonprofit Internship Application and the Nonprofit Referral Form and is continuing to meet with nonprofits. The Nonprofit Internship Program is a 15-week, paid internship where youth will work part-time with local nonprofits. The referral form allows nonprofits to recommend candidates for the program, and applicants will receive interview dates so BYJP can begin worksite placements.

"BYJP has helped me learn skills that will help me succeed in the workforce. This has impacted my life by preparing me for future opportunities and making me better equipped to succeed in them. It has provided me with experience and given me connections I wouldn’t have otherwise had. I am appreciative of the BYJP experience and the opportunity it gave me to grow in this space."

The Center for Sexuality & Gender Diversity (The Center) recruiting new board members

The Center is actively recruiting new board members. We are committed to having a diverse board representing the entire LGBTQIA2S+ community in Kern County! The Center recognizes the sacrifice and honors the time board members put into helping The Center grow and fulfill its mission while maintaining a critical eye to supporting its values. The Board will support the work of The Center and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance.

The Center is a small non-profit that was an all-volunteer organization until 2016, when we employed our first two employees. The Center's staff and services have grown in the past few years and require board members who are up for the challenge of providing and supporting the growth, diversity, equality, and inclusion of all the members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. We are recruiting new board members for 2023! Come volunteer with us and shape the future of The Center. Check out our website for more information on joining and the online application.

NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT

Black Infant Maternal Health Initiative (BIMHI)

In July of 2021, the Black Infant and Maternal Health Initiative (BIMHI), was created to address the disproportionately high maternal and infant death rates experienced by the black community in Kern County. Over the course of a year, volunteers from 19 different organizations representing government, community-based organizations, the health care industry and community members, helped to develop a three-year strategic plan. BIMHI's mission is “Striving for birth equity through unity and empowerment.”

Their overall goal is to effect positive change in the death rates of Kern’s black infants and mothers. To achieve this, BIMHI has established the following goals:

  1. By June 30, 2025, will increase by 3% African American/Black health care professionals will be trained in Kern County by hosting a public awareness campaign, creating a two-year paid internship, and creating an educational pathway through local colleges.
  2. By June 30, 2023, mental health will be addressed as a factor for African American/Black infant and maternal mortality by facilitating focus groups and sister circles, while implementing a three-year phased public awareness campaign.
  3. By June 30, 2023, involve the community, especially African American/Black mothers, to create a monthly sister circle around wellness by locating a facilitator, selecting topics for discussion, and engaging the African American/Black community to participate.

BIMHI will be hosting a provider dinner/forum to educate our local maternal and infant medical providers on the health outcomes faced by our black community. The dinner will be held on April 14, 2023 and we are seeking sponsors to help with the cost of the dinner/forum. For more information please visit their website https://kernbimhi.com
