The Center for Sexuality & Gender Diversity (The Center) recruiting new board members | |
The Center is actively recruiting new board members. We are committed to having a diverse board representing the entire LGBTQIA2S+ community in Kern County! The Center recognizes the sacrifice and honors the time board members put into helping The Center grow and fulfill its mission while maintaining a critical eye to supporting its values. The Board will support the work of The Center and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance.
The Center is a small non-profit that was an all-volunteer organization until 2016, when we employed our first two employees. The Center's staff and services have grown in the past few years and require board members who are up for the challenge of providing and supporting the growth, diversity, equality, and inclusion of all the members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. We are recruiting new board members for 2023! Come volunteer with us and shape the future of The Center. Check out our website for more information on joining and the online application.

In July of 2021, the Black Infant and Maternal Health Initiative (BIMHI), was created to address the disproportionately high maternal and infant death rates experienced by the black community in Kern County. Over the course of a year, volunteers from 19 different organizations representing government, community-based organizations, the health care industry and community members, helped to develop a three-year strategic plan. BIMHI's mission is “Striving for birth equity through unity and empowerment.”
Their overall goal is to effect positive change in the death rates of Kern’s black infants and mothers. To achieve this, BIMHI has established the following goals:
- By June 30, 2025, will increase by 3% African American/Black health care professionals will be trained in Kern County by hosting a public awareness campaign, creating a two-year paid internship, and creating an educational pathway through local colleges.
- By June 30, 2023, mental health will be addressed as a factor for African American/Black infant and maternal mortality by facilitating focus groups and sister circles, while implementing a three-year phased public awareness campaign.
- By June 30, 2023, involve the community, especially African American/Black mothers, to create a monthly sister circle around wellness by locating a facilitator, selecting topics for discussion, and engaging the African American/Black community to participate.
BIMHI will be hosting a provider dinner/forum to educate our local maternal and infant medical providers on the health outcomes faced by our black community. The dinner will be held on April 14, 2023 and we are seeking sponsors to help with the cost of the dinner/forum. For more information please visit their website https://kernbimhi.com
