We hope you will join us for our next series of KC Shepherd's Center's Adventures in Advocacy Sessions where we focus on critical public policy issues. Here is the line up:
July 12 - Our Changing Demographics: Regional Issues and Transportation Solutions
Join us for an insightful session with guest speakers from the MidAmerica Regional Council (MARC). Learn about key issues affecting our regional transportation system and how current and future plans are designed to accommodate the needs of older residents. Discover how advocacy can shape transportation policies to better serve our entire community.
July 19 - Demystifying Property Taxes and Legislative Solutions in Missouri
Join us for a discussion with Scott Lakin, Director of Jackson County Department of Collections and Amy Blouin, Executive Director of the Missouri Budget Project, who will provide an in-depth look at how local governments set and generate property taxes. This session will address recent struggles with rising property taxes and rent costs, and explore legislative solutions in Missouri, including the adjustments proposed in SB 190 and proposed adjustments to the Missouri "circuit breaker" senior property tax credit.
July 26 - Challenges Facing County Government
This session features At-Large Jackson County Legislator Jalen Anderson, who will discuss key issues affecting older residents, including the need for additional public support for programs and the challenge of rising property taxes. This engaging session will provide valuable insights and advocacy strategies for addressing our concerns.
August 2 - What Happened to Trusted Media Sources? Navigating the Changing Landscape of Independent Journalism
This session features acclaimed journalist and former head of the KC Star Editorial Board, Barb Shelly. She will discuss the disappearance of independent media in Kansas City and nationally, and what we can do to ensure accurate reporting and information on policy issues, as election season approaches.
All sessions will be held from 11:00 am to noon at Keystone Methodist Church, 406 West 74th Street, Kansas City, MO 64114. Follow the signs to the check in desk at the coffee shop. We look forward to seeing you there - please bring a friend!
