On July 14, 1965, the Older Americans Act (OAA) was signed into law, creating the first U.S. system providing home and community-based services to older adults. Sixty years later, the law remains a cornerstone of support for older Americans.
The OAA helps older adults stay connected to their communities and remain independent in the places they call home. Annually, it serves more than 14 million people — about 1 in 6 older Americans — through services like meals, transportation, in-home care, and caregiver support. That adds up to more than 250 million meals, 14 million rides, and 30 million hours of in-home and caregiver support delivered each year. KC Shepherd's Center receives OAA funding through Mid America Regional Council for our Meals on Wheels program and integrated care. Our Meals on Wheels program delivered 200,000 meals last year and volunteers provided nearly 40,000 hours of service, valued by the IRS at nearly $1.4 million - doubling our staff capacity and ability to serve older adults.
This anniversary comes at an important moment. The appropriations process for fiscal year 2026 is here, and a significant increase in OAA funding is critical to ensure that national aging services can continue to support those in need and meet this rising demand. Please urge Congress to protect and increase funding for the Older Americans Act (OAA).
