At KC Shepherd's Center, we advocate for public policy and funding to support older adults, embedding the voice of the older adult in self-advocacy. This week, we are asking you to contact Missouri lawmakers to show your support for property tax relief for older adults and people with disabilities in Missouri.

As housing costs rise, so do property taxes, creating a significant challenge, particularly for seniors and individuals with disabilities. The increasing property taxes make it harder for them to afford their homes and sustain their communities, especially in Jackson County, where there's a lack of affordable housing.

To address these challenges, we advocate for the expansion of the Missouri Property Tax Credit, also known as the "circuit breaker." This credit provides crucial relief to older homeowners, renters, and individuals with disabilities. However, since its last update in 2008, it has failed to keep up with inflation and rising property tax rates.

Your Action Matters: Contact your state legislator (by following this link) and let them know that:

  • Rising housing costs and property taxes are a significant challenge for seniors and individuals with disabilities.
  • You support the expansion of the Missouri Property Tax Credit to broaden eligibility, increase assistance, and ensure stability for older adults and individuals with disabilities.
  • Unlike other property tax freeze initiatives, this statewide effort will not compromise essential local programs like Meals on Wheels, public safety and public schools.

In Missouri, we have an opportunity to provide meaningful tax relief to those who need it most, whether they are homeowners or renters. Let's work together to ensure that older adults and individuals with disabilities can continue living comfortably in their chosen homes and communities.
