At KC Shepherd's Center, we are committed to promoting the dignity, independence, and wellbeing of ALL older adults. Through leadership, coalition, and advocacy, we work to ensure public policies reflect the needs and realities of aging adults.
What is Happening:
What is now the second longest government shutdown in history has entered its 28th day with no end in sight. Senate Republicans and Democrats have failed to agree on short-term funding measures from both sides of the aisle after a 13th vote earlier this week.
Senior hunger is on the rise across the country. 30% of the seniors KCSC serves receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits; compared to 12.5% nationwide. Yet food assistance used by more than 40 million Americans will not be distributed starting on November 1st due to the ongoing US government shutdown, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
Many states have announced that they’ll run out of money for SNAP
- SNAP is essential in bridging nutrition gaps for older adults, and disruptions and cuts to the program have a compounding impact on Meals on Wheels providers and the vulnerable population we serve.
-
Senate Democrats sent a letter to the administration urging them to release funding to continue SNAP into November.
