KC Shepherd's Center led advocacy efforts for two years to help pass the Jackson County Senior Levy in November 2024. Now, Missouri lawmakers are holding hearings to review state level property tax policies. These decisions could affect how senior services are funded at the local level.
Why these hearings matter: Many senior services, including the newly passed Jackson County Senior Levy and the Senior Property Tax Credit are paid for by local voter-approved tax funds. If state property tax policies change, those services could be at risk.
Missouri Council on Aging Executive Director, Stacy Morse, testified during the first hearing of the Missouri House of Representatives Special Interim Committee on Property Tax Reform and explained how local funds help older adults stay safe and independent and age in place. Additionally, the hearing included informational testimony from county clerks, assessors, emergency responders, and librarians.
These hearings are an opportunity for senior levy fund managers and boards to share the impact of property taxes, which provide critical services. View live hearings and see the recording of the first hearing: Missouri House of Representatives
