Deacon Paul Sappington to be ordained to the Priesthood in KCSJ on June 25

When asked about his hopes or dreams as a priest, Paul said, “I do not have any career goals or aspirations in that sense as a priest. I hope to continually give my life over to God to be his instrument in bringing people into his kingdom. Whatever way God wills for that to take place, I hope to be available.”

The public is invited to attend as Deacon Paul is ordained a priest at 10 a.m., June 25, 2022, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Subsequent to his June 25 ordination to the Priesthood, Bishop Johnston has made the following assignment effective July 1, 2022:
Rev. Mr. Paul Sappington is appointed Chaplain to St. Michael the Archangel High School, Lee’s Summit, with residence at St. Thomas More Parish Rectory, and will assist with parochial liturgies on Sundays at St. Thomas More and St. Catherine of Siena Parishes, Kansas City.

Bishop Johnston marks 20th anniversary of Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People

In his role as chair of the USCCB's Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People, Bishop Johnston shared his thoughts last week on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People:

"It was two decades ago that the U.S. bishops gathered in Dallas to draft a comprehensive set of child protection standards that became the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.

I am most grateful for the engagement of survivors who have shared their painful experiences with us and have allowed us to walk with them in their journey towards healing as we strive to create a culture of protection and healing, and continuous improvement."

Our Sunday Visitor chronicles the first 20 years for the Charter

"Victim-survivors of sexual abuse by priests, child protection professionals like Deacon Nojadera and bishops say the charter undoubtedly made the Catholic Church in the United States safer for children and other vulnerable people, and it offered a path to begin to address the harm suffered by those already hurt.

"But what might be the most significant change, according to victim-survivors, is the creation of safe environment programs ... — all with the goal of stopping abuse before it starts.

“'The single most important change of all were the articles that were enacted at great financial cost to the Church,' said Teresa Pitt Green, a victim-survivor of sexual abuse by a priest when she was a child. 'A child protection program was put in place that is a leader in the world. U.S. Catholics need to take a breath and say, ‘wow.'”
