Volunteer Spotlight: Susan Garrett
|
Susan first became involved with KDB through a neighborhood cleanup 12 years ago. She actively coordinates two Adopt-A-Spot crews, one in her neighborhood and another for a National Junior Honor Society.
As an educator, Susan helps create a lasting impact by leading middle school students in cleanups. While volunteering, the students recognize the importance of keeping their community clean not only for the present, but also the future. Susan notes that volunteer work with KDB benefits not only Denton, but also nearby water systems, and that the trees provided from programs such as the Community Tree Giveaway and
Denton Redbud Festival
bring beauty while sustaining and renewing our environment.
Susan volunteers for various KDB programs including the Great American Cleanup, Tree Giveaway, as well as additional cleanups, but her favorite volunteer experience was helping give EarthBox garden kits. She said, "It was wonderful to see the excitement of people as they received all the components, including seedlings, to plant their own small garden." Susan has taken on lead roles at KDB events and worked to develop an interactive garden at the school where she works, which was then funded by a KDB Environmental Education Grant.
When Susan is not volunteering, you can find her reading or enjoying the great outdoors, biking, trail running, and gardening.
