August's Yard of the Month WinnersYOTM
3825 Kirby Dr. - Ulinda and Michael

Ulinda and Michael worked hard to earn the title of Yard of the Month! The couple installed drip irrigation and laid sod all on their own to create a beautiful yardscape. They also take full advantage of containers to provide some pops of color along the front of their home. Their hard work paid off and our YOTM judges noticed!

619 Parkway St. - Peggy and Rob

Peggy and Rob spend many hours enjoying their beautiful yard. They have native plants like Salvias and Sedum in the front garden, and have efficient drip irrigation installed to keep their gardens lush and thriving. A large native oak tree provides shade on hot summer days.

2017 N Locust St. - Jane and Scott

The couple began work on their yard eight years ago and used Dyno Dirt to prepare the space. Jane and Scott were the first customers of Turnkey Landscaping and have worked with the owner on the plans for their low-maintenance, water-conserving design. Jane hopes that their yard will serve as an example for their neighborhood and other Denton residents who might not have the time or energy for a more standard yard. Her favorite aspects are the south side of the property beyond the decorative gate and the gate itself.

2502 Robinwood Ln. - Lindsay and Matt

Lindsay and Matt use Dyno Dirt and manure from their backyard chickens to fertilize the entire front and back yard and gardens each spring, as well as mulch from the City to dress the flowerbeds and tree bases annually for water retention. They created flowerbeds along the perimeter of the front, west facing yard, which dries out quickly in the afternoon heat. However, these beds have been planted with native or well adapted drought tolerant plants, so they stay green with little water and provide food for pollinators in the hot summer months. Lindsay and Matt aim to limit grass to the area beneath the canopy of their trees so that watering the trees also results in watering the grass. The couple purchase plants almost exclusively from Dennis' Feed Store or directly from Painted Flower Farms.

3005 Terry Ct. - Kathy

Kathy is a member of Denton County Master Gardeners (DCMGA) and has maintained her yard - featured in DCMGA's tours TWICE! - since 2004. She prepared her soil with Dyno-Lite, and swears by the Dyno Dirt products offered by the City of Denton. Her yard is a perennial cottage garden and is in line with Texas Agrilife EarthKind practices. Her "secret" to a great garden is to have a master landscaping plan and to prepare the beds BEFORE planting. If you use EarthKind practices and DynoLite like Kathy, your yard could use up to 70% less water than with traditional upkeep. Now that's what I call drought-resistant!
