KDIGO 2024 Lupus Nephritis Guideline Publishes in Kidney International
The KDIGO 2024 Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Lupus Nephritis was released in the January 2024 issue of Supplement to Kidney International, with an Executive Summary published in the main pages of the journal. The guideline is also available on KDIGO Lupus Nephritis (LN) Guideline website, where additional resources will be released in the coming weeks. Developed under the stewardship of Co-Chairs Brad Rovin, MD (United States) and Jürgen Floege, MD (Germany), this guideline is an update of the LN chapter of the KDIGO 2021 Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Glomerular Diseases.

Drawing from the latest approvals of belimumab and voclosporin by the FDA and EMA, the guideline provides updated recommendations and practice points for using these new therapies as add-on immunosuppressive agents in the management of LN. The development of the guideline followed an explicit process of evidence review and appraisal. As part of KDIGO’s transparent guideline development process, the draft guideline was made available for public comment in March 2023, receiving valuable feedback, which was meticulously reviewed and considered by the Guideline Work Group.

"We are thrilled to publish the Lupus Nephritis Guideline, which follows only two years after the publication of the KDIGO Glomerular Diseases Guideline and reflects the latest advancements in the field,” said Dr. Rovin. "This guideline offers critical insights into navigating the complexities of LN treatment, especially with the introduction of novel therapies, and highlights the need for individualized therapy selection based on patient-specific factors and clinical scenarios. With ongoing trials evaluating additional novel therapeutics and promising new data on the horizon, the guideline sets the stage for future advancements in the management and treatment of LN.”

Resources for Managing Symptom-Based Complications in Dialysis
People on dialysis often experience and report distressing symptoms. Recognizing the burden of these symptoms on patients, KDIGO continues to pursue ways to empower clinicians to identify and manage these symptoms.

In May 2022, KDIGO hosted the Symptom-Based Complications in Dialysis Controversies Conference to identify the optimal means for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of symptom-based complications in patients undergoing dialysis therapy. The conference produced two conferenced reports, Managing the Symptom Burden Associated with Maintenance Dialysis and The Role of Nephrology Nurses in Symptom Management. KDIGO has also released infographic sets on this topic, including the Management of Symptom Burden in Dialysis Infographic Set and the Pruritis Infographic Set. Visit the conference website to learn more.

The recording of the last month's ISN-KDIGO Webinar on Symptom-Based Complications in Dialysis, which was based on the KDIGO Controversies Conference, is now available on the KDIGO YouTube channel and the ISN Academy. The webinar features conference co-chairs Raj Mehrotra, MD (United States), and Edwina Brown, MD (United Kingdom). The webinar also features conference attendee and patient, Dawn Edwards (United States).

In December 2023, the KDIGO Workshop on the Nurse's Role on Managing Symptoms of People Receiving Dialysis addressed key strategies required to advance the pivotal role of nurses in addressing symptoms associated with kidney failure and dialysis treatment. A publication based on the workshop is currently in development.
