The 5Essentials Survey now open for Teachers, Students & Parents, and closes on 2/14. Looking for 100% response rate for teachers and students. We are continuing to encourage parents to take the survey, but appreciate any reminders that you can share with families as well.
Superintendent's Corner

  • We are currently working on the 2020-2021 School Calendar and anticipate the dates to be published in early February.

Teaching & Learning
  • Upcoming PD Opportunities:

  • #PDinPJs continues through January. The group is studying Fostering Resilient Learners: Strategies for Creating a Trauma-Sensitive Classroom by Kristin Sours and uses Flipgrid to share insight and responses with other staff.

  • District Math Committee has been meeting with SW staff to determine how best to place students in middle school math courses. Will also evaluate feedback from other Lake Park HS feeder districts and MAP results to determine our specific needs.
  • Literacy Nights 4:00-7:00pm will be offered as continued support for planning and assessment for balanced literacy:
  • 1/27 Kindergarten
  • 1/16 2nd Grade
  • 2/4 3rd Grade
  • 2/11 4th & 5th Grade

  • STEM Club at Greenbrook continues through January on Thursday mornings before school. 45 students (grades 3-5) attend each week. They begin with a group story and kids select which of 4 STEM activities they would like to participate in that morning. Waterbury STEM Club will begin in February.
Student Services
  • We are developing brochures with overviews of our programs at ECC and special education to share with families and staff.

  • Coordinating with FastBridge to pilot their progress monitoring tool in a small sample of classrooms in the district. We will share more information with this formative assessment software as we evaluate the pilot.

  • MTSS Committee met on Tues. 1/28 from 8:30am11:30am. Talking points will be shared with staff.
  • Continue to research bilingual curriculum and other needs for improving EL Program for the future.

  • Continue to have discussions regarding Time Out/Isolation law.

  • Continue to provide PD in de-escalation to meet the needs of our students. The next PD on this topic will be on Friday, 2/14 for all staff.
Finance & Operations
  • We are developing a Substitute Handbook and updating the Staff Handbook. We hope to have these completed by year-end.

  • You should have received your W2 for 2019 in your mailbox. You can also print your WS from SDS (Frontline) by looking in your message center. Please contact Barb Fang at bfang@esd20.org with any questions.

  • District and building administrators continue to work with Roselle Police Dept. to make improvements to safety and traffic at Waterbury.

  • District administrators are working on developing an Emergency Operating Plan for the district. We are looking to hire an outside consultant to help us ensure all of our buildings are safe and secure for our staff and students.
  • Regular meetings continue for planning LRC renovations at Waterbury and Spring Wood with district and school administrators, staff, and design architects. We have developed concept plans for both spaces and will be looking for bids on our projects over the next few weeks, which then will be reviewed and presented to the Board for approval at the February meeting.

  • Continue to meet with 2nd grade teachers at Waterbury and 5th grade teachers at Greenbrook to finalize furniture selections for future-ready classrooms and hope to have the orders completed by March. We are working with Spring Wood to identify four classrooms for furniture upgrades.
  • Technology Committee continues to meet regularly. Demo machines were discussed to determine which laptop/tablet devices teachers will use next year. We also looked at LANDesk classroom management software and will review GOGuardian next month. Teacher technology expectations were discussed and we will look at making any changes at our next meeting.

  • New generator has been installed which will help support the network in the event of a loss of power.

  • The transition to Clever has been completed.

  • The planning process has started for building a device agnostic network.

Community Relations
  • Seeking teacher nominations from each school for students in grades 4-8 for the next Student Ignite Awards by 2/18. Awards will be given at the Board Meeting 2/27. Nomination Form.

  • Registration process for 2020-2021 is being reviewed and finalized. Kindergarten will begin early April at a parent information night ("Kindergarten Round-up"). Older grades will begin registering in early May online. All families (new and returning) will need to prove residency before they can register their student(s). We plan to host Family Registration at each individual school, asking parents to go to their youngest child's school.

  • District 20 Annual Report for 2019 has been delivered to residents and can be viewed on website. Annual Report
  • Parent Cafe on Keeping Kids Safe Online: Social Media Safety & Awareness, presented by the internet safety expert from the DuPage County Sheriff's Office, Law Enforcement Division, who also teaches this topic at College of DuPage. Moved to 3/12.

  • Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC) for our families of EL students. The next planning meeting will be held on 2/6 from 4:30-6pm.

  • Census 2020 - we are working with Hanover Park Village to help encourage residents to take the Census 2020. We will share more information on how you can help after 5Essentials survey closes 2/14.
