One of 200 copies on Flower paper, printed in Golden type. Spectacular binding by Zaehnsdorf, with their gilt name stamp on front doublure (dated 1900) and their small pictorial stamp on rear endleaf. Bookplate of M.C.D. Borden on verso of front endleaf and of George Edward Dimock on recto of rear endleaf. The first octavo volume issued by the press. The author a sometime fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. Finely bound in full tan morocco, elaborate acanthus leaf pattern stamped in brown, with borders of gilt and brown rules, matching full morocco doublures with acanthus leaf devices at corners, ruled borders, morocco endleaves with ruled borders, untrimmed. Wood engraved title, borders and initials designed by Morris. Limited edition, one of 600 copies. FORMAN pp. 182-183, and in his introduction notes [this title] "Morris got back to a thoroughly human story racy of British earth in the old days, - the story admirably conceived and laid-out and the characters drawn with the consistency and vigour to be expected from the liberal hand......" Full woodcut page border, numerous 10-line and smaller woodcut initials. The only Kelmscott Press book with a hand lettered title calligraphic title executed by F.S. Ellis, and the first book bound in limp vellum. PETERSON A3 & A5. Our copy in blindstamped brown morocco, decorated endpapers, raised bands, spine labels printed in gilt. Binding signed "HCF 1916." Upper Mall, Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1896. 34 pages. 29 x 21.5 cm. Limited edition, one of 250 of a total edition of 260 printed in Troy type. The first Kelmscott Press printed in three colors -- black, red and blue and with decorative borders and initials. Poems herein taken from a Psalter written by an English scribe, most likely in one of the Midland counties, early in the 13th century. "Morris purchased an early thirteenth-century English Psalter, which he called the Nottingham Psalter. One section of the Psalter, A Laudes Beatae Mariae Virginis, which Morris printed, was attributed to Stephen Langton or to John Peckham." PETERSON A42. Orig. cloth backed boards. Fine. $3,900.00

There is a separate title to each of the four parts into which the poems are divided. William Morris border on page one. The only Kelmscott book with initials in red. Morris wrote to Jenny Morris, "'...it looks very gay & pretty with its red letters, but I think I prefer mine in style of printing'". Two woodcut borders, numerous woodcut initials, printer's device on colophon page. Gilt spine lettering bright, partly unopened. PETERSON 3. SCOTT pp.83-84. Limited Edition, one of 500 copies of a total edition of 505. Peterson A17. Title and first leaf with decorative woodcut borders, decorative woodcut initials, decorations and devices, stanza numbers printed in red. Following the discovery of some typographical errors "four cancellans leaves were printed...and were perhaps inserted in at least a few copies of Maud." (see: Peterson). Original limp vellum, yapp edges, spine lettered in gilt, silk ties. Fine in near fine original green card slipcase with front cover gilt lettering. Full vellum. $4,850.00

Limited edition, one of 250 copies printed on Flower paper (of a total of 258). According to Peterson, this work was very popular, with only four copies unsold two days prior to publication. As Peterson notes, Morris was not particularly enthusiastic over Herrick and only remarked "I like him better than I though I should: I daresay we shall make a pretty book of it". PETERSON. A37. Upper Mall, Hammersmith: Kelmscott , 1895. 56 pages. 14.5 x 11 cm. Printed in Golden type in black and red. Wood-cut title page. This was the only book Morris printed for the American public, and the only Kelmscott book to bear the name of an American publisher. The English and American copies have a slightly different colophon. The shoulder-notes were added by Morris. Way became a personal disciple of Morris, and later visited England to see him at Kelmscott House, where he was told how Morris "wanted to make some nice books, but had no thought of developing such a business as has come to the Press." Way then described their arrangement for the joint book, which was to be Rosetti's "Hand and Soul." SPARLING 36. SCOTT p103. Fresh, crisp copy.
