KEY BISCAYNE AND BEYOND!!!

,

Happy Women's History Month!!!

Welcome to the March Issue of Key Insights Newsletter.

My father, Federico Padovan, moved our family (including grandparents) here in 1973. I was raised  on the Island and left briefly to earn a BFA degree at NYU. But my heart never left Key Biscayne. So I returned to my Island Paradise home where I am raising 4th generation Key Biscayners with my husband Donnie Hall.

As a life-long resident and Realtor on Key Biscayne, I love sharing upcoming events and Interesting activities offered around our community for the residents and frequent visitors of our Island  Paradise and beyond.

We also have three very lovely contributors adding their Insights as well!
To read more about me, CLICK HERE.

I want to sincerely THANK all of you for the wonderful feedback and interest in participating in my newsletter!!!

March is Women's History Month!
The large majority of ancient cultures were patriarchal, and they practiced customs that held women in low  esteem and limited their freedom. Through the centuries, many courageous women have stepped forward to fight inequality and to champion causes for the benefit of society. Their work to break down barriers has allowed future generations of women to pass through without resistance. Women's History Month honours these women.

The women's movement of the 1960s put the spotlight on women's issues and made it clear that historical contributions by women had been completely discounted. As historian and activist Gerda Lerner said in 1986, "When I started working on women's history about thirty years ago, the field did not exist. People didn't think that women had a history worth knowing." Lerner's pioneering work has been responsible for the introduction of Women's Studies programs into the university education system, and remarkable contributions by amazing women are now documented as part of history.

Some suggestions for individual celebrations of Women's History Month include:
  • Read a biography about a female pioneer, perhaps Amelia Earhart, one of the first ladies of aviation, paving the way for women in the flight industry
  • Watch a film about women's movement origins and suffragettes Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony
  • Volunteer or make a donation to an organisation for women's education
  • Post a link about your most-admired woman in history on Facebook
In 1975, the UN officially recognized International Women's Day. Women's History Week is a progression of that, and Women's History Month is a further extension. Throughout the month, various community events, internet blog series, television presentations and entertainment specials will be staged to look back on women's achievements, to celebrate the progress made by women around the world, and to remember that there is still work to be done.

Teen Dating Can Be Violent?

Many think of "love" when they think about last month, but February  was also "Teen Dating Violence and Prevention Month."  Love should not hurt.
Here are some statistics to demonstrate how prevalent this issue is:

-Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year.

-One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner.

-One in ten high school students as been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend.

-43% of dating college women report experiencing violent and abusive dating behaviors.

(statistics from loveisrespect.org)

Parents, please speak to your children. There are many articles online to guide your discussion.  If your child is exhibiting signs of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and/or thoughts of suicide, consult  a psychologist. Let's bring awareness to this issue and prevent teen dating violence.

What is our Purpose?

People will often associate their purpose in life to their career with questions like, "What am I here to do?" Perhaps you do, in fact, feel purposeful in the different roles you play as a worker, professional, parent or homemaker, for example. Maybe your hobby provides and nourishes the joy that none of the other parts in your life can fulfill.
Our forefathers who wrote the Constitution were certainly onto something when they talked about "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Why? Because ultimately happiness is our purpose in life. We play such a myriad of characters throughout the various stages of our lives that to tie our drive to only one facet such as a career is rather limiting. The ups and downs of parenting, the journey of an unfolding career or romantic relationship are just drops in the ocean of experiences in a given lifetime. It is in our best interest to find pleasure in all that we do no matter the endeavor as there will always be obstacles to overcome and learn from. In the end, we choose all the quests in our life in order to be happy. What a meaningful pursuit in and of itself!

HOW TO EMPOWER WOMEN
What a wonderful trend in supporting other women, girl power and all the girl bosses. Our community loves to share articles, videos and images all geared towards the empowerment of women. What are you doing daily to make an empowering change?

It's the month of women empowerment, how will you take part?
I created this simple worksheet "HOW TO EMPOWER WOMEN" to help FEMS get geared up, focused and committed to empowering other FEMS. What can we do today to help other FEMS? What action plan can we create to propel them higher in life and work? How does this help you and all FEMS in our community? Take a few moments and work on these few questions.

We invite you to visit  FemCity.com daily for the best advice and inspiration. Be sure to connect with your local FemCity community and attend one of our FEM Marketplaces, too [a.k.a. Girls' Night Out Events]. We know firsthand what it's like to be in business for yourself, and the kinds of bumps you might encounter along the way. FemCity was specifically designed to make your journey less turbulent and to help you "have it all" (insert your own definition here).
