The Good Shepherd

Good morning Kristin,

Reflecting on Good Shepherd Sunday, I am grateful that we see in the person of Jesus Christ a model for ourselves and our educators, as is so often captured in our schools.

I noted the distinction made between the good shepherd and the hired man. “The hired man, whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away.” One of the distinguishing qualities I encounter when I speak with students, families, and educators about their experience in our schools is the communal sacrifice that everyone makes to ensure the success of the school. In asking why, I hear of a deep concern for those they serve and for those who are part of the community.

Jesus reminds us also, however, that he has other sheep that do not belong to this fold and that those he must also lead. This remains our call. To care deeply for the students entrusted to us, and to recognize that we are call to serve even those who are not yet part of our school communities.

Opportunities to gather and learn, such as last Tuesday’s master class with Dr. James Knight, allow us to grow deeper in this call. I am grateful for each of your commitment to this work and to extending this mission in your respective communities, working in solidarity together to build the Kingdom.

With gratitude,

NICHOLAS FORD | Superintendent

Office for Catholic Schools | Archdiocese of Seattle
