From Our President
Dear KGC Friends,
Thank you for the privilege of serving as KGC's President for the next two years. I'm honored that you selected me, and thrilled to be following Stephanie Keehn who so ably launched our club into its second century. I'm sure each and every one of you join me in expressing a debt of gratitude to Stephanie and her family, as well as to all of the Presidents and members who made KGC the wonderful club that it is today.
The GCA Annual Meeting was absolutely fabulous! GCA President Anne Copenhaven reminded us that we are "steeped in tradition but ever evolving" and that "the only thing certain other than change is the speed of that change". Later that morning we heard from a fabulous Teddy Roosevelt "Reprisor", Joe Wiegand. Teddy launched so many initiatives that we take for granted today: the National Parks, the Panama Canal, and so much more. We are fortunate to have followed those with such foresight and tenacity.
Speaking of foresight and tenacity, Sue Cozzens was beyond brilliant in appointing Mary Lois Hakewill and Martha Spalding as 2016 GCA Annual Meeting Signage Chairmen. Those attending were never lost! We were guided by Mary Lois' and Martha's clear and aesthetically smashing signage. KGC was literally everywhere at the Annual Meeting! And thank you to our volunteers: Jackie Bossu, Shelley Galloway and Stephanie Keehn. They were agile and fearless as they took to their tasks.
Like "TR", Shelley Galloway again rose to the challenge. One of her photo entries took First Place, and another received an Honorable Mention. The Show's
pièce de résistance was her spectacular Floral Design winning Second Place. There was always a crowd around Shelley's extraordinary and innovative creation, marveling at its beauty, creativity
and engineering. Kudos to our Shelley, who then saved the Awards Banquet, stepping in and helping with 70 centerpieces and 700 fern-bedecked chargers. I'm exhausted just writing about it!
So let's embrace the change, while always "keeping our sense of Place, People and Purpose" (more of Anne's wisdom). We'll share our love for all things flowers during our Flower Show on June 15th. Please be like Teddy and go for it! The show is going to be "bully"! That morning, we will also tour a 119-year-old country club's organic gardens, chicken coop and beehives. KGC's Heather Blackwell will be one of our guides.
Finally, thank you to all who said "yes" to Katherine Buehler and her Nominating Committee. I look forward to working with you and with each and every KGC member, the Kenilworth Park District, other Kenilworth clubs and civic organizations, and the entire GCA family.
Now, let's go play in the dirt!
Always,

The historic, renovated Minneapolis train shed was the setting for the GCA Annual Meeting May 20-22.
What an amazing, intelligent, creative group of energetic women! The meeting began Friday night with welcome cocktails, complete with wandering "wood sprites." On Saturday, the group was wowed by two wonderful speakers: Congresswoman Betty McCollum and Theodore Roosevelt impersonator Joe Weigand. The message was clear: nature is our greatest resource and we should cherish and protect it.
Congresswoman Betty McCollum is author of a bill to regulate natural resource extraction in our National Parks, and discussed the danger of ore mining in the Boundary Waters, a place dear to many people on the North Shore, especially the Boy Scouts who have explored the waters there for decades. Congress-woman McCollum spoke passionately about all the wonderful natural areas in Minnesota, and how important they are to Minnesota residents and those who visit. While some mining leases are long standing, the Bill she is sponsoring -- the National Park and Wilderness Waters Protection Act -- would require the renegotiation of current lease terms to add remediation measures to make sure contamination from mining waste can not enter the water shed.
"President Roosevelt" (Joe Weigand) thrilled the crowd with his dead-on impersonation and tale of his life and work saving many of America's important natural areas, peppered with wonderful Roosevelt quotes. He even answered questions in character, and when asked how he would solve the current impasse in Congress replied that he would "take both Democrats and Republicans for a hike in Rock Creek Park"!
GCA President Anne Coperhaven spoke about "Place, People and Purpose", and how volunteerism is changing, as well the speed of our lives, due to technology. The Six Focus Areas she highlighted are Conservation, National Affairs and legislation, the upcoming Capital Campaign, Headquarters renovation, and volunteers and staff.
The business meetings on Saturday and Sunday provided updates from all the GCA Zones and Committees as well as a presentation about what GCA has meant to senior members and how it's changed their lives. There was an emphasis on the benefits of lifetime learning and how GCA membership requires us to constantly improve ourselves while making life-long friends.
The delegate break-out meeting focused upon the many GCA "tracks" from which to choose. As members we are encouraged to:
Learn something new
Learn how to grow!
Make new friends!
Make and impact in our community!
Be a friend to the environment!
Learn nature photography!
Travel with visiting gardens!
Study Design!
Enter a flower show!
GCA is a great place to learn a new skill, make a new friend, ed
ucate yourself. As the presentation emphasized,
"
you
'
re never too old to learn a new trick!
"

Martha Spalding, Lenore Macdonald, Mary Lois Hakewill, Cristy Laier & Jackie Bossu show off their signage creations.
|
Four years ago, when I asked Martha Spalding to be my co-chair on the signage committee for the 2016 GCA Annual Meeting, she laughed & said,
"What year are you talking about?" Well, she agreed, four years did pass, and yesterday we were having a glass of wine together while finishing up our duties by writing a report for next year's committee. We were laughing & talking about how much fun we had, and it was a sense of satisfaction to think that we had done a good job. We both learned a lot (think Google Docs and spreadsheets!) & now have a much greater understanding of how GCA works and what it has to offer. We met wonderful people in other clubs whom we would never have known. Like anything in this world, the more you put into something, the more you get out of it. With our own flower show coming up and Show of Summer looming, we encourage you to say
"Yes" to the many opportunities that our club and our national affiliation have to offer You'll have much more fun than you expected....

KGC BEAUTIFIES MISERICORDIA
KGC has a long Outreach history with Misericordia Home. On Friday, May 15th, KGC descended upon Misericordia for its annual planting. Jeanne Daniel, Joan Dodson, Barb McDonough and Lenore Macdonald planted annuals and then had lunch at Misericordia's GreenHouse Inn Restaurant, staffed by residents. Its proceeds support Misericordia. Staff stopped by to watch the planting, and KGC'ers shared their gardening knowhow with them. Watch the newsletter for the next Misericordia Outreach Project and join us.

WARE GARDEN UPDATE
If you haven't had a chance to see the new planters around the fountain at Ware Garden, please stop by! There is also a new bluestone surface around the base of the fountain -- no more little stones.
Some regular members have already signed up for 2-hour shifts on Monday from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.; we have also scheduled 2 Saturdays during the summer. If you haven't received an email notice from SignUp Genius or have any problems with the sign-up, please contact Wendy Yamada.
At least one member of our committee will be at the garden each session. We look forward to seeing you there! Remember to bring a weeding tool, kneeling pad if you need one, clippers for deadheading, gloves, insect repellent and whatever else you might need.
See you at Ware!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Each month, we feature a different KGC member. This month, the spotlight is on new member Kendra Cunningham-Kasper.
Kendra is a long-time Kenilworth resident, an active member of a fellow Kenilworth garden club and a very involved individual in our community. Kendra has been a board member of Kenilworth Neighbors for many years for which she continues to design all of the floral arrangements for their monthly luncheons and events. Kendra has also been the design guru behind two Sears School benefits, as well as the 2015 New Trier graduation party. Additionally, in her "free time," she is the founder/owner/partner of three independent businesses: Glorious Blooms (special event floral designs), Potted Deux (outdoor container designs) and GLO Bags (Gym Locker Organizers).
Kendra Cunningham-Kasper
What are your interests outside of KGC?
Art, mosaic, flowers, crafts, sculpture, garden art, travel, animals and my kids.
What is your favorite plant or flower?
I have some purple bearded iris and parrot tulips in my garden that I'm pretty fond of right now.
What garden has made the biggest impression on you?
Probably the Huntington Library Botanical Gardens in San Marino, CA (below).
What is your favorite gardening or floral design tool? My favorite gardening tool would be my hands. Currently, my favorite flower arranging tool is chicken wire.
Tell us something we may not know about you.
In a previous life, I was a costume designer in LA and worked on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."
Editor's note: Although Kendra is much too modest to mention it, it should be noted that she hand-made Stacey De Luca's wedding dress in 2013.

The GCA's Conservation, Garden History and Design, Horticulture, and National Affairs and Legislation Committees have joined together to request KGC's help in supporting the Garden Club of America's opposition to the Smithsonian Institution's proposed demolition of the Enid A. Haupt Garden adjoining the Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall.
GCA President Anne Copenhaven wrote to government officials, "Noting that the Haupt Garden is a joyous introduction to Victorian and other garden design, the GCA calls on Smithsonian planners to undertake further study before moving forward 1) to assess and address the period of significance for this garden; 2) to revisit whether the garden should indeed be included on the National Register of Historic Places and 3) and to honor the terms of Mrs. Haupt's gift. Because the Smithsonian depends upon the generosity of donors, remaining true to donor intent should be an essential consideration."
Comments submitted by the GCA's Executive Board raised serious concerns about the Smithsonian's billion-dollar South Mall Campus master plan and calling for "further research." You can find additional background information at
http://www.southmallcampus.si.edu/index.html as well as information about the garden at http://tclf.org/landscapes/enid-haupt-garden
Because the U.S. Congress oversees the Smithsonian budget, GCA is encouraging us to reach out to our legislative representatives to register opposition. Senators Durbin and Kirk's and Congressmen Dold and Schakowsky's contact information is in our Club Directory.

| KGC's Shelley Galloway, a Photography Judge Candidate, at the 2016 GCA Annual Meeting Judges' Dinner |
One of the great joys of GCA association is it's terrific Judging program. Hopefully by now, all of us have exhibited in one or two disciplines. It is a thrill to feel the challenge of the competition spurring our
artistic efforts, no matter how accomplished we may be.
GCA offers all of us the unique opportunity to become a Floral Design, Horticulture or
Photography Judge. The journey sounds daunting at first, but after visiting the GCA webpages,
and
You might find that it's a great way to enhance your knowledge while meeting other like-minded people. One thing is certain: you will learn so much and be a great asset to KGC.
KGC currently has one judge, Lyn Little (Floral Design) and one candidate, Shelley Galloway (Photography). Contact them anytime to learn more. KGC will help you along the way. The first step is to enter a flower show (like ours on June 15th!)! Please let Lenore know if you are interested in pursuing this unique opportunity. TRAVEL TALES
The Natural Wonders of the Dominican Republic
by Stacey Deluca
Hor*tog*ra*phy - the art or process of photographing horticultural species
OK, it's not a real word, or at least not a word recognized by Merriam-Webster. But it's still a pasttime recognized by many professional and amateur photographers, like myself, who simply admire beautiful flora and enjoy capturing images of outstanding and unique species.
In May, I had the good fortune to travel to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic for some R&R with my husband, Mike. I had been to the Dominican Republic a few times before but never to this particular resort, nor to Punta Cana, located on the southeast side of the island (which is occupied by Haiti on the western side). What initially struck me about the resort, besides the charming, rustic island architecture, was the beautifully manicured landscaping. I've visited most of the Caribbean Islands over the years, and each is lovely in its own way -- some volcanic, some arid, some verdant and lush. But I've found that the
landscaping at many resorts tends to be uninspired, predominantly featuring hibiscus and bougainvillea, obviously opting for low maintenance over horticultural diversity.
This resort was different. The head groundskeeper clearly had intentionally selected a vast array of indigenous plants, many of which I had never seen before. I spent one cloudy morning walking around the grounds "hortographing" the magnificent and fascinating native species in an effort to bring them back to you. Here's a selection of what I enjoyed and admired at Zoetry Agua, Punta Cana...

Information Bulletin
Sent: June 1, 2016
West Nile Virus
The following message is provided by the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District regarding mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile virus in Kenilworth. More information is available on their website at:
www.nsmad.com
Note: Infected mosquitoes have been found in Glenview as well.
The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District has found the first West Nile virus positive mosquitoes to occur in our traps in Kenilworth this year.
A batch of mosquitoes, collected on May 27, 2016, from a NSMAD trap in Kenilworth, tested positive for West Nile virus in our lab on May 31.
While the risk of being infected with West Nile virus is low at this time of year, the NSMAD recommends that residents take personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites including: using insect repellent, wearing loose fitting clothing and avoiding peak mosquito feeding times during the hours around dawn and dusk. Residents are urged to examine their property and eliminate any items that can hold water, particularly smaller items that may be easily overlooked.
Remember, if it can hold water, it can breed mosquitoes.
