Chaperone Policies & Training Resources for Pediatric Practices
Following the recent Sterling Seacrest Pritchard and Curi Risk Management Webinar on chaperones and terminating the patient relationship, KHF has received several follow-up questions from practices regarding chaperone policies, documentation requirements and staff training expectations.

A recent KHF member survey found that many practices are currently updating or developing formal chaperone policies, with several specifically requesting additional guidance regarding EMR documentation, signage and workflow implementation.
Sample policy considerations and operational themes shared by practices included:
- Offering chaperones for sensitive exams
- Documenting whether a chaperone was offered, accepted or declined
- Posting policy signage in exam rooms or patient areas
- Clarifying that parents or companions may not substitute for formal clinical chaperones in certain situations
- Incorporating documentation workflows into EMRs
The sample Curi policy additionally outlines recommended documentation elements, patient communication expectations and formal chaperone responsibilities, including maintaining patient dignity, privacy and confidentiality.
