Tails from the Foster Files: Annie

Annie was part of a larger community colony in Bremerton when an observant and caring resident noticed that she was obviously injured. The kitten was caught and brought to Kitsap Humane Society for care.

Dr. Jess examined the kitty and found her to have an upper respiratory congestion and an eye injury, both of which required medication. And that's where one of our fantastic fosters stepped in. She took the kitten into her home, made sure she got her meds, fed her, and cared for her - and adorable little Annie is now on the mend. "Over the past few days things have been improving and we can actually see the pupil in her left eye today," Annie's foster wrote.

Each year, Kitsap Humane Society cares for thousands of animals just like Annie and we couldn't do what we do without the invaluable assistance of our incredible foster families. When a kitten needs ointment applied to her eyes, they're there. When a litter of puppies needs to be bottle fed several times overnight, they step up. And when animals need a loving place to stay for a few weeks or just the night, they open their homes and hearts.

"Where There's a Will, There's a Way

August is National Make-A-Will month, so KHS alum Hank (right) and his friend Pax think it'd be a great time to start thinking about your legacy. Regardless of how busy you are, how wealthy you are, or how difficult it is to ponder the future, you need to plan now to make sure your wishes are followed later. Bottom line, the time to make a will is right now.

And if you’re reading this, you're probably an animal lover like we are - so you might consider remembering Kitsap Humane Society in that will. By including KHS as a beneficiary of your will, trust, life insurance, or retirement plan, you can provide a lasting gift for future generations of pets in need. We welcome the opportunity to help you explore gift planning options and can direct you to other in-person financial and tax planning resources as well!

Big Dog Days Are Back! Choose Your Own Fee!

Sure... puppies are cute and all, but the big dogs are where it's at. They're goofy and gangly. Loyal and loving. They'll get you outside for exercise and then keep you warm on the sofa. They'll be your best big buddy and there's nothing we love more than finding a home for the largest boys and girls in our care.

That's why we're bringing Big Dog Days back! Throughout the month of August, come up to Kitsap Humane Society, find a new friend, and take him or her home - and we'll let you choose your adoption fee! This special applies to all adult dogs 40 lbs. or heavier until August 31. Visit us and meet your new big pal today!

Our Puppuccino Pal for August - Viking City Bricks!

Rahlo loves something cool on a hot summer day in the play yard, so he really loves our Puppuccino Pal sponsor for the month - Viking City Bricks!

If you like Legos (and of course you do), Viking City Bricks is just about the coolest place in Poulsbo, with a crazy collection of new and gently used Lego sets - including those hard-to-find collectors' mini-figures. Need a Princess Leia to complete your collection? A brick portrait of Elvis? A fistful of spare yellow heads? They've got it all. Thank you, Viking City Bricks!

And don't miss our adoption event on August 18 - at Rockin' Ruby's Records, right next door to Viking City! Come for the collector albums and Legos, leave with a puppy or kitten!

We Couldn't Do It Without Them

Kitsap Humane Society has seen a lot of success over the past year, largely thanks to the incredible support we get from our community. We're fortunate to have been recognized both nationally and locally for our work, and the support we receive in response helps us continue our efforts. Here are just a few of the folks we owe an enormous debt of gratitude!

Thank you to the Bainbridge Community Foundation (BCF) for a recent gift of $14,400 to fund our low-cost spay and neuter services and our Foster Care program!

BCF's mission is to encourage, inspire, and provide meaningful ways for people to enhance and sustain Bainbridge's unique way of life. They see this work as a movement as much as a mission - a mission they fulfill by analyzing community needs, awarding grants to meet those needs, connecting donors with nonprofits, offering public training on key topics, and supporting capacity building and collaboration among nonprofits.

Thanks to BCF, the Bainbridge community, and six donor advised funds, KHS was fully funded in its request. Given the challenges faced in animal welfare: animal overpopulation, post-pandemic fatigue, and longer length of stays for animals in shelters locally and nationwide, BCF's support is deeply appreciated and will help us care for even more animals. Their generosity - as well as that of BI's residents and businesses - has been instrumental to the growth of Kitsap Humane Society. Thank you!

Thank you to Greater Good Charities' GOODS program! This outstanding project sources and manages excess, re-branded, and short-dated food and supplies from donors including manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. GOODS then makes these products available to qualified and approved distribution groups (Ambassadors) who ensure they reach the organizations that need them. The GOODS distribution network consists of thousands of charitable partners including animal welfare organizations, food banks, VA locations, and other qualified agencies - and Kitsap Humane Society is honored to be the organization's only ambassador in Washington state.

Since being selected to be a part of the program in November 2023, KHS - with help from Bremerton Foodline (thanks Cori, Brandie, and crew!) - has received pallets of pet food, medicines, and dog and cat beds to be distributed throughout the community! We couldn't be more proud to be a part of this team!

We also want to thank all of our local partners, from the 19th Hole Bar & Grill and their Summer Community Nights benefit event and West Hills Kia's KHS Adoption Event, to all the wineries participating in Wine & Whiskers, to Macaroni Kid - the online parents' publication that helps us promote our adoptables! We couldn't do it without you!

In 2023 alone, 511 animals were brought to Kitsap Humane Society as strays and returned to their owners. This year so far (as of July 31, 2024), 326 animals have been reclaimed, including this beautiful, giant, and aptly named Maine Coon - Maximus.

Meet Ipsy!

Hello! My name is Ipsy, and I'm an 8-year-old kitty looking for a loving home. I absolutely adore people and have become a favorite of the KHS staff. I love rubbing up on your legs, having conversations with you, and occasionally curling up in your lap. If you're looking for a loving and chatty companion who enjoys a good balance of independence and affection, I'm the purrfect kitty for you. I can't wait to find a home where I can share my love and charming personality!

Meet Lincoln!

Hi there! I'm a curious and energetic explorer who knows sit, shake, and down, and loves treats and neck massages! I love being outside, sniffing the best sniffs and would make a fantastic hiking companion. After a long day of adventures, I like to come home and cuddle with my humans. I'm happy to sleep by your side all night and be your active companion by day. I'm also friendly and enthusiastic with other dogs, making me a good fit for a household with existing pets. If you're looking for an active and inquisitive companion who also enjoys snuggling up at night, I might be the perfect match for you!
