Haselwood Auto Helps Drive Our Mission

Every year, our good friends at Haselwood Auto Group in Bremerton jump in to do something remarkable for the animals in our community. Throughout the month of July - through their "Drive for a Cause" program - they donate to Kitsap Humane Society $20 for every vehicle purchased and $5 for every service repair order. And boy, does that add up.

Last year, Haselwood presented KHS a check for $92,868 and - all told - has raised nearly $385,000 through the program to support the animals in our care. What's more, they commit to a lot of terrific advertising to draw attention to the work we do. Thanks to the generosity of owners Joanne Haselwood and Rick Wiler - and that of the managers, salespeople, advertising and events staff, and clients - KHS is able to provide an even greater safety net for our community. Please stop by Haselwood and say "thank you" on behalf of the critters in our care - and maybe buy a car or two!

"Bombs Bursting in Air" is Scary for Some

Independence Day is this week, which means backyard cookouts, hot dog eating contests, and beautiful and fun fireworks, which are sadly terrifying for many of the animals we call family.

Dogs and cats are far more sensitive to sound than humans and frightened pets will dash through open doors, jump through windows (yes, even through the glass), and over fences to get away and hide. In this panicked state, they are at risk of being hit by a car or getting lost. It’s one of the reasons so many dogs are found stray and brought to the shelter after the 4th of July. So make Independence Day enjoyable by keeping your pets calm and safe!

Have a good time AND keep your pets safe with these helpful tips:

  • If you're hosting a party, it’s wise to keep your pets in a calm room with the door closed when guests are coming in and out. One loud “bang” could have your dog or cat escaping out the door.

  • For sensitive pets, the fireworks noise on the 4th (and in some neighborhoods, before and after then) cause extreme fear, trembling, vomiting, and running away. During home fireworks displays, animals are also at risk of burns or ingesting toxic materials.

  • The best place for a pet during the fireworks is in the house with you, so you can reassure them, pet them and attempt to keep them calm. If you aren’t with them during the festivities, put them in a room in the house with the door closed and shades drawn, a comfy bed, a few articles of clothing, a bowl of water and classical music on the radio to help mask the sound of explosives outside.

  • If your pet suffers from extreme anxiety and can’t be calmed, consult your veterinarian about medications that might help him or her.

Can We Crash at Your Place for a Bit?

Each year, Kitsap Humane Society cares for thousands of animals. We nurse them back to health, teach them to be great companions, and find them loving homes. Some of our furry friends need a little extra help, though - the kind that comes from our incredible foster families.

These extraordinary people open their hearts and homes to the injured, the timid, the youngest and the oldest animals. Whether they foster for a few weeks or just overnight, they make an indelible difference. That's especially true this time of year, when our kennels are full of littles - puppies, kittens, bunnies, and even the occasional piglet that need special care and bottle feeding. Fosters are an enormously valuable resource to KHS and the animals in our community - and you can be too.

Become a foster and you’ll gain invaluable skills and experience. You’ll help your community and earn volunteer service hours. Most importantly, you’ll save lives.

Adorable Adoptables!

Meet Nebraska!

Hey there, I'm Nebraska, a spirited two-year-old pit bull mix with a black-and-white coat that's as striking as my personality. I'm a bundle of energy and love to play with my hoomans and other dogs. I'm a sweet, affectionate girl who just wants someone to love and be loved in return. I'm loyal to a fault and will always be by your side through thick and thin. So if you're looking for an energetic companion who will make your life a lot more fun, look no further. Come down and meet me... I'm ready to be your new best friend.

MEET NEBRASKA!

Meet Glorious!

Hi, I'm Glorious, a shy and timid cat, navigating the world with cautious steps and a gentle heart. My wide eyes reflect a world of uncertainty, yet beneath my reserved exterior lies a wellspring of tenderness and affection. While I may shy away from loud noises and unfamiliar faces, I blossom in the quiet comfort of familiar surroundings, where I can share serene moments of warmth and companionship with those who understand my gentle nature. Though I may not seek out attention like more outgoing felines, those who take the time to get to know me will find a loyal and loving companion who appreciates every gesture of kindness.

MEET GLORIOUS!

A Huge Thank You to Our Community Partners

Even as we provide a safety net for our community's pets and people, our community has our back at every turn. We're extraordinarily proud to partner with some amazing individuals, organizations, and businesses and eternally grateful for their support. Here are just a few thank you's to some of the people who went the extra mile for KHS in June!

To Kitsap Junk Removal, who spent two days clearing out the old, worn-out, broken-down kennels in our Feline Holding area to make way for brand-new kitty quarters. In just the latest way (among many) they've shown their support for our mission, they did the work free-of-charge at a breakneck pace and were big fun to work with. Thanks guys!

To the lovely ladies from the Eagles Auxiliary 2338, who stopped by with a check for $1,269 to donate toward helping us help animals (pictured at left with KHS co-Executive Director Jamie Nocula), you are incredible! Click the link to learn about their Monday Bingo nights... just one of the ways they're building a better community!

And to Tami Bowen, owner of CB's Nuts in Kingston for donating several cases of the best peanut butter that's ever been scooped into a Kong (we may have had a few dollops ourselves) and for taking a tour of our new clinic. Here she is (left) with our Development team members Jessi Reynolds and Jocelyn Horton. Our dogs love you!

FUNDRAISE FOR THE ANIMALS!

June Adoptions

Every month - sweet companion animals like the two little cuties at right find wonderful new homes thanks to the efforts of our amazing staff and volunteers. Among all the things we do, watching them happily jump in the arms of their new parents is the best part of our job. And June was another joyful month for these guys and many more.

In June, 298 pets found loving homes including 64 cats, 51 dogs, a whopping 148 kittens, 25 puppies, 3 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs, 2 goats, 2 roosters, and a desert tortoise named Franklin who was near death, rescued by our vet staff, and will now probably live to be 80 years old. Yay Franklin!

If you've recently adopted a new family member from KHS, we'd love to hear more! Submit your KHS alum's Happy Tail for a chance to have them featured across our social media platforms!

Learn How to Leave a Lasting Legacy

There are many ways to support Kitsap Humane Society: volunteering, fostering, and of course, donating. Many people, however, may not be aware of the myriad options available to those who wish to donate. One of the best ways is planned giving.

But how? You're in luck! Join our friends from the Latitude 48 Group on the KHS campus August 14 at 5 p.m. and learn how to make your gifts last well into the future. You'll find out how planned giving can benefit you and the organizations you donate to from investment strategy expert Damon Novelli, Executive Director of Eaton Vance. And you'll learn about the KHS Friends Forever Society, which recognizes the generous people who remember our organization in their wills and plan for a lasting impact on our community.

To RSVP, please email co-Executive Director Jamie Nocula at jnocula@kitsap-humane.org.

See you there!
