In April, we told you about a Mason County case of 67 dogs and a horse who were living in squalid conditions, on the brink of starvation, and in desperate need of rescuing. Katherine Johnson - Executive Director of the Humane Society of Mason County - called upon Kitsap Humane Society and other shelters across the state to jump in and help.
Each organization took as many animals as they had capacity for, nursed them back to health, and went about finding them loving homes. Each of these sweet pups were special, but one stood out. We called her Fozzie (because she looked a lot like the Muppet, but dirtier, sadder, and without a hat).
| |
As KHS Animal Control Chief Chase Connolly assessed the condition of each dog - a process that took nearly 7-1/2 hours - Fozzie stood nearby, waiting her turn, with a look on her face that asked: "Do I get to go too?"
She did. Fozzie was one of 10 dogs that were loaded into KHS trucks and brought back to the shelter. There, they were bathed, vaccinated, and cared for until they were finally adopted. Fozzie was taken in by a longtime supporter/new foster family and treated like the queen she is. And when it was time for her to go, her new people simply couldn't give her up. It's what we call a "foster fail" and it's really not a "fail" at all; it's a victory for everyone involved.
With the adoption of Fozzie (now named "Blue"), the last of the Mason County dogs had found new homes.
As her new mom wrote to us: "She is incredibly smart, patient, and emotionally very intelligent! I cannot get over how lucky we are to have had the opportunity to foster her and immediately fail! We knew the first night that there was no way were ever going to let her go. Thank you!"

Our Puppuccino Pal for June - BluBerry!
There are two things that we just cannot get enough of - cute dogs and frozen yogurt!
This month we get the best of both worlds with our Puppuccino Pal for June - BluBerry in Silverdale!
Onyx here is partial to the French Vanilla with rainbow sprinkles, but wouldn't mind if they added some pepperoni pieces to the menu.
Thank you BluBerry!

How About a Little Love for the Kitties?
Two of the many ways Kitsap Humane Society provides a safety net for our community is through the Pet Food Pantry and our foster families. The Pantry provides free pet food for families who are having a tough time making ends meet and our fosters provide temporary homes for the most vulnerable of our furry friends.
Sadly, however, when it comes to food for these programs, the demand almost always outweighs the supply and our cupboards are often bare. And because kitten season is upon us, we're particularly short on wet kitten food for our newborn felines. That's why we're asking for your help to stock our shelves.
You can help us help them by visiting our website and purchasing items from our Amazon, Walmart, or Chewy Wish Lists. Or you can simply drop items off on our Admissions doorstep. All donations are tax-deductible.
Thank you for supporting the kittens!

To prepare them for new homes, volunteers and behavior professionals work with dogs through playgroups, meet-and-greets, and off-site outings.

Meet Onyx!
Onyx is a playful 1-year-old black Lab with plenty of energy and curiosity to brighten up your life! With his shiny black coat and amber eyes, this handsome pup is looking for a new family to shower him in the love and affection he deserves. Onyx is a frequent presence in our daily playgroups, and loves to hang out and play with his canine friends! When he's not romping around in the play yard, he's hitting the town on shelter outings, enjoying his weekly hiking trips and plenty of treats from the humans! Meet Nala!
Our adoption office buddy, Nala rules the Pet Adoption Center, ensuring her adoring staff members give her all the Churu treats and morning snuggles. Nala enjoys having her own personal space and a nice cozy bed to drift off for day-time naps. She's a independent gal who enjoys life on her own terms, with her humans nearby! While she has plenty of people here to keep her company, this senior gal would love a warm window and comfy home to spend her golden years!

A Huge Thank You to Our Community Partners
Our community is amazing! From the businesses who hold events for us, to the school kids who collect food for the critters in our care, we're enormously grateful for our supporters. Here are just a few who have recently gone above and beyond for KHS!
Many thanks to the Bremerton Elks #1181 for collecting more than $1,300 to support our mission - and they even showed up with a giant check!
A big thank you to the students of Silverdale Elementary, who collected pet food and treats, crates, toys, and more for our resident animals. And we were able to stop in and give them a short presentation about everything we do. Thanks, kids!
| |
Thanks to Denette Chu's Edward Jones Investment office for collecting food and supplies for KHS for three straight years. Their most recent drive was in honor of staff member Shannon Cass' birthday. And we're the ones who got gifts!
And finally, a big debt of gratitude to the great people at Lowe's of Bremerton, who gifted us a much-needed, brand-new lawnmower and a weed-eater. Our campus grounds look better than ever thanks to you!

Every month - thanks to the efforts of our amazing staff and volunteers - we get to watch the animals we love find new homes. It's the best part of our jobs and the reward for everything we do - seeing the wagging tails as our friends join up with their happy new families.
In May, 201 pets found loving homes including 69 cats, 59 dogs, 49 kittens, 14 puppies, 3 guinea pigs, 2 rabbits, 2 ferrets, 1 bearded dragon, a chicken, and a duck.
If you've recently adopted a new family member from KHS, we'd love to hear more! Submit your KHS alum's Happy Tail for a chance to have them featured across our social media platforms!

Kitsap Humane Society's June 1 PetsWALK will go down in history as one of the best ever, with unprecedented community engagement - via sponsorships, vendors, participants, and volunteers. It was a day of cute pets at every turn, great food, outstanding entertainment, and - outside of about 10 minutes of sprinkling - fantastic weather.
All told, over $65,000 was raised to support the animals of KHS. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen and everyone who sponsored, donated, set up a booth, or participated. If you'd like to read more about PetsWALK 2024, you can read the Kitsap Daily News coverage of the event here.
