A Night Filled with Magic

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 31st Annual Animal Krackers presented by Brown Bear Car Wash!

It was a spectacular evening during which we were able to thank all of the wonderful people who support the animals in our care - and make an enormous difference in our our community.

We heard the stories of animals whose lives were magically changed, met the people who make the magic happen, and raised nearly $370,000 (and counting) for the dogs and cats and hamsters and bunnies - and every other kind of animal in our care.

Your generous gifts ensure that every animal that walks, flies, or waddles through our doors is treated with compassionate and individualized care. Thanks to you, Kitsap Humane Society will continue to be a safety net for people and pets in our community. Thanks to you, we can keep people and pets where they belong - together.

On behalf of the staff, volunteers, Board Members, and animals here at Kitsap Humane Society - THANK YOU!

October Adoptions

This month, we sent many wonderful residents, like Marley here, off to new adventures. Adoption events including Subaru Loves Pets at Peninsula Subaru and Sunday FUNDday at Eleven Winery helped us pair animals with loving families. During the 16th Annual MARS Pet Adoption Weekend, 17 adult cats and dogs had their adoption fees sponsored by MARS and Pedigree.

In October, 285 pets found loving homes including 87 cats, 49 dogs, 129 kittens, 15 puppies, 4 guinea pigs, and a turtle! We still have dozens of animals waiting for their homes. Consider adopting today!

Have you adopted a KHS pal in the past? We'd love to hear about your furry, feathered, or scaly friend's success! Submit your 'Happy Tail' for a chance to have them featured across our social media platforms!

Home is Where the Heart is... Finally.

At KHS, we are grateful to the support of our community in helping animals find wonderful homes. For some animals, the wait can be longer than anticipated... much longer. For Patchy, the wait is finally over.

We first met Patchy in the Spring of 2023 when he came to KHS as a stray. A family fell in love with Patchy's charm, and he was quickly adopted. Unfortunately, Patchy returned the following summer as his owners were sent orders to go underway. Tail tucked and on high alert, Patchy was back in the shelter environment.

Like all dogs who enter our care, staff took this as a chance to get to know this gentle giant. Returning to the shelter, it was apparent Patchy was stressed. Patchy was showing he needed some more behavior support to help him be more successful while in a stressful space. Staff were determined to show Patchy his future was bright.

A month into his stay, Patchy was sent to a foster home where his personality was able to shine. "We’re so glad we gave him a break from the shelter," said Regina Thomas, who fostered Patchy a few times during his stay. "Some dogs just don’t cope well in that environment, and it’s heartbreaking to see the stress bring out behaviors that aren’t truly reflective of who they are in a loving home." The Thomas' were able to see that many of his behaviors were evidence of his extended time at KHS. He loved fetch, was wonderful on walks around town, and enjoyed lounging on the couch. In a way, Patchy's foster family helped him learn how to be a dog again.

Over time, KHS staff and volunteers were able to witness Patchy's growth and welcome him out of his shell. Though selective, Patchy began making friends with other shelter dogs. His circle of people grew, as did his trust. No longer was Patchy the snarling, fearful dog brought into KHS. "Patchy is a perfect example [of a stressed animal]—an utterly wonderful dog outside the shelter. We’re especially happy that his shelter break with us allowed him to show his best self when he met his new person."

Every animal teaches us something valuable, and Patchy reminds us that rehabilitation is a team effort. Animal Care staff, the Behavior team, Foster families, and lots of love helped Patchy become the dog a family fell in love with. His story is now continuing outside the walls of KHS. Happy Tails and Sticky Thoughts, Patchy!

Pretty Proud of Our Partner

A great big shoutout to our friends at Bremerton Foodline, which was named “Nonprofit of the Year” at the Greater Kitsap Chamber Annual Gala. Over the past year, we’ve been proud to partner with them in support of Greater Good Charities’ GOODS program.

As the only Greater Good ambassador in Washington state, Kitsap Humane Society – in cooperation with Bremerton Foodline – has brought in more than 100,000 pounds of food, medicine, and supplies to disperse for free to area families in need. The fellow nonprofits that have benefited from this partnership include The Rise Rescue Alliance, Central Kitsap Food Bank, PAWS of Lynnwood, Humane Society of Mason County, PAWS of Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap, Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, and many, many others. The Community Behind our Mission

It is apparent how important community is here in Kitsap - and this month we were delighted to welcome many different individual and group volunteers through our doors! The crew over at Silverdale Lowe's visited KHS and helped provide lawn care across campus. Volunteers pulled weeds along Dickey Road, spruced up the entry landscape, and got a bit of puppy love in the process.

Students at Central Kitsap School District have been visiting campus once a week to help with various back-of-house tasks like laundry, kennel cleanings, and socialization with animals. The students are always eager to lend a hand and we're incredibly appreciative of their time and willingness to jump into action!

Want to get involved? There are plenty of ways to donate your time to KHS - and we'd love to have you!

Adventure Alongside the Animals

Want to support a shelter animal in a unique way? Consider joining our Barks and Rec program or becoming an overnight foster!

Barks and Rec is a day trip program for KHS shelter dogs to get out and experience new things, making new human friends along the way. Similarly, hosting a dog for a few nights through our foster program allows some time away from the stress of shelter life. All experiences outside of shelter walls encourage animals to practice natural and positive behaviors, and we would love for you to join the team!
