Share Your Day with a Special Friend
Are you looking for a buddy to hike the backwoods with? How about a wingman for a day at the park? Or maybe a pal to accompany you to the beach? We’ve got you covered with an exciting new program to help create more connections between our community and the dogs in our care looking for new homes – Barks and Rec! Barks and Rec allows community members to sign up to take eligible KHS dogs out for a day of fun and adventure. Whether it's a short car ride to get a tasty pup cup or a longer venture for a day hike to take in some scenic views, community members can help contribute to enrichment activities for our shelter pups while also increasing their visibility within the community.
| |
By spending time with our shelter pups, you can help KHS show off some of our special dogs who are waiting for their new homes, aid us with collecting more information on how they might enjoy spending their time out of the kennels, and grow engagement between the shelter and our community! Not only is this program beneficial for enriching the lives of our shelter dogs, it also gives the shelter more information on how our pups do out and about so we can help better support them throughout their adoption journey. And you might just make a new best friend!

Bet You Didn't Know....
Not all service dogs are used to aid blind individuals. Some other "working" dogs include diabetic and seizure alert dogs, psychiatric services for those with PTSD, and autism support dogs.

A Shadow in the Night...
Hi there I'm Shadow! I'm a sweet 3-year-old kitty on the hunt for a loving home. I absolutely adore playing and can't wait to find a family that will shower me with attention and love. Whether it's chasing toys or snuggling up for some quality cuddle time, I'm all about enjoying life to the fullest. If you're looking for a fun and affectionate companion, I'm ready to bring lots of joy and love into your home!

Beep Beep, Elantra Coming Through!
Hi there! My name is Elantra, and I'm an 8-month-old pup looking for my home. I can be a bit hesitant when meeting new people, but once I get comfortable, I become quite exuberant and affectionate. Because of this, I would do best in a home with children over 12 years old. I could use a little help with socialization, but I'm a big love bug at heart! I'm also not the biggest fan of cats, so a home with no cats would be ideal for me! I absolutely adore treats and love running around the yard. After a good run, I enjoy snuggling up and giving lots of love. If you're looking for a loyal and loving companion, I can't wait to meet you!

Benjamin Franklin famously said: “Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy.” While that may be true, we’re absolutely pawsitive that Wine & Whiskers – our annual two-month winery tour – is proof that KHS has the best supporters, and we love to see them happy.
This year’s event, presented by Wheaton Way Veterinary Hospital and which spanned August and September, invited passport holders to tastings at ten of Kitsap’s most heralded wineries with pop-up celebrations at selected locations.
Thank you to everyone who participated in a pour and the wineries (and one brewhouse) that opened their doors and uncorked their bottles for the animals!

More Groundbreaking Work at KHS
There have been several improvements around the KHS campus, including the addition of four new chicken coops! Hood Canal Roofing volunteered their time, money, and materials to get our chicken coops professionally built and roofed. Not only will our chicken residents enjoy the new architecture, but so will other livestock during their stay at the shelter. Thank you to the crew for your all your hard work!

On September 8th, we proudly unveiled Poppy's Memorial Courtyard. When longtime KHS supporter Paula Carlson passed in October 2023, with her companion Poppy following just months later, she made a gift to KHS, helping secure the remaining funds for our Veterinary Lifesaving Center (VLC) and fully funding a memorial courtyard. The legacy that Paula left goes far beyond commemorating Poppy and all the animals she had the chance to love. Paula’s love for animals continues to shine through with her vision – which she painstakingly designed herself, right down to the words on the signage. ‘Poppy’s Memorial Courtyard’ is a space for our staff, volunteers, and community members to pause, breathe, and remember those who touched our hearts.
We are blown away by the support of our community and longtime supporters as KHS continues to grow toward the future.

We're Looking for New Foster Families!
It's well known that an animal thrives best in a loving, supportive home. That's why we're always looking for more foster families to join us in saving lives!
Foster homes are needed to provide temporary homes for animals whose current medical or behavior conditions are not manageable in a shelter setting. By taking a foster animal into your home on a temporary basis, the animal is given the opportunity to adjust to a home environment and is given additional time to find a permanent home and recover from any current medical conditions in comfort. Plus, it creates more room at the shelter for another animal in need.
Sometimes our animals just need a break from their kennel, and a night or two away can help relieve the stress of the shelter. Our largest foster need is for people who can accommodate large dogs, those who are able to care for ill or injured animals, or underage puppies and kittens who come to the shelter with or without a mom.
