KID Releases Recall Radar Report
KID released a new report, Recall Radar: Nursery Product Recalls in 2023 Highest in Over a Decade, analyzing children’s products recalls in 2023. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled 26 nursery products, the highest in over a decade. Eleven of these recalls and 20 additional warnings were due to suffocation hazards because the products violated various federal safety regulations for infant sleep products that recently went into effect.
Additional findings of the report include:
  • The CPSC released 35 warnings regarding children’s products or adult products that could hurt children in 2023, much higher than in 2022 (five warnings).
  • The report found that there were six deaths reported before a product was recalled. Three deaths were due to choking hazards (two toys and one candy), one was due to ingestion hazards from a water beads product, and two were due to fire hazards from a lithium-ion battery in a scooter/hoverboard product.
  • Social media usage by the CPSC and recalling companies to alert consumers about recalled products remained low.

Building a Bridge to Safety is the cornerstone of all the work we do here at KID. Whether it’s advocating for better safety standards, championing legislation designed to keep our most vulnerable children safe or connecting families who have experienced insurmountable loss with vital resources, our efforts are built on this foundation. This year, we are proud to honor Trista Hamsmith for her tenacious advocacy to prevent button and coin cell battery ingestion. Join us on Thursday, April 25, in Chicago as we honor Trista at our Best Friend Award Night. Emceed by award-winning journalist Lisa Parker, the event will feature appetizers, drinks, raffle, auctions, wine toss, and more. Purchase tickets and sponsorship now at our event page.
New CPSC Report on Tip-Over Injuries and Deaths
The CPSC recently released the report, Tip-Over Injuries and Fatalities Associated with Televisions, Furniture, and Appliances. The report found that from 2020 to 2022 there was an average of 17,800 emergency room (ED) treated injuries, and from January 2013 to July 2023 there were 217 reported fatalities associated with tip-over incidents. Of these, children suffered 7,800 (44%) injuries, disproportionally higher than the general population. Of the fatalities reported 155 (71%) involved children under age 18 years.
In a big win against these types of injures and death, Congress passed the STURDY Act (Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth) in 2022, requiring all furniture to meet more stringent stability standards. Furniture makers must now test their dressers for stability, and provide anchoring kits when they are sold. This law took effect on September 1, 2023, and will hopefully reduce these kinds our deaths and injuries.

Urgent Warning for All Roller Ball Candy Products
The CPSC is warning consumers about the choking risk associated with roller ball candy products. The candy’s rolling ball can dislodge and become trapped in a child’s throat, posing a fatal choking risk. Last year, one child died as a result of this hazard, and another required emergency surgery.

The Commission has issued recall announcements for three roller ball candy products, including Cocco Candy Rolling Candy, which was cited in the choking death of a 7-year-old girl; and Happiness USA Roller Ball Candy which was associated with the hospitalization of a 7-year-old boy. Student Teams take on High Chair Safety Designs
Through KID’s TEST program, Four student teams from the Segal Design Institute at Northwestern University re-designed high chairs to minimize fall injuries with a more intuitive design for parents.

TEST, or Teach Early Safety Testing, partners with university and high school engineering and STEM programs to incorporate design safety into the engineering curriculum. The program provides important background materials and educational opportunities on safety for tomorrow’s designers and engineers of children’s products. The KID Design Safety Toolkit for product designers grew out of this program.
The CPSC released warnings about two other dangerous products this month. View our Digest to see these additional products.
