Alumni Spotlight

Alumni Name: Shakeim Francis '23

KIPP Capital Region School: KIPP Troy Prep High School

College: Cornell University

Major: Computer Science

Why did you pick your college and your major?

"I came to Cornell because I wanted to experience life away from home and live on my own. It was the best way for me to learn more about life and become independent. Also the idea of going to an Ivy school was just mind blowing to me. The reason I chose Computer Science is because I like technology, but I didn’t want to focus on one thing as a career. With computers, it allows you to pursue a variety of fields and explore your interests as future careers."

What do you like most about college?

"The best thing about Cornell is the opportunity to meet amazing people. The student body is incredibly diverse and very friendly, so it’s always nice to make a new friend on campus. It’s even better to explore Ithaca with them whenever we don’t have class."

What advice can you give to new freshmen going to college this semester?

"My advice to freshman going to college this semester is to experience something new with an open mind. It can prove to be very helpful for you in the future."
