KLA Secondary moves to Distance Learning
April 13th
|
|
Dear KLA families,
I want to first start off by thanking you all for your flexibility, patience, and understanding as we respond to the COVID-19 EmergencySchool Closure. As we continue to live in a time of the unknown, I want to assure you that I am committed in making our KLA children my priority as I face any and all decisions made alongside our KLA Leadership Team, the County, the State and the Federal government.
Distance Learning and Attendance Accountability begins
Monday, April 13th.
All KLA Secondary students must log in to their Period 1's Google Meet at 8:30am. In an effort to create a sense of community and connection to our KLA culture of learning, students are highly encouraged to wear their
KLA uniform polo shirt during instructional hours. They can access the Google Meet link via their Google Classroom Stream. If your child is not able to log in, please contact their Period 1 teacher before April 13th. For all technology concerns, please email
parentsupport@mykla.org. Your child's teachers are ready and excited to begin this new journey with them! In a time of uncertainty,
Mr. Anthony Morales, our counselor will also be readily available to serve the social emotional needs of our students. The KLA community is so fortunate to have such ambitious and motivated educators.
I hope you find the information below to be helpful in addressing any questions that you may have regarding what to expect of your child's learning. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at tsartain@mykla.org. We look forward to seeing your child in uniform at 8:30am on April 13th via their Period 1 Google Meet.
I wish for you to be happy, healthy, and peaceful,
Tertia Sartain

What is Distance Learning?
KLA Secondary has adopted the following parameters as we transition to Distance Learning:
|
|
- When using distance learning, students work online at home while the teacher assigns work and checks in digitally.
- Distance learning includes no in-person interaction between teachers and students. However, you’ll likely rely on digital forms of communication such as messaging apps, video calls, discussion boards, and Google Classroom and Illuminate..
- Distance learning is a method for delivering instruction solely online or remotely.

Grading Policy during COVID-19 learning
While students will continue to be assessed on their level of mastery of grade level standards, KLA teachers understand that the level and rate that students may thrive in a distance learning model will vary. Therefore, student attendance and the progress monitoring of the Learning Logs will be heavily weighed when factoring grades. Having your child attend every class and complete their Learning Logs will ensure positive outcomes. Your child's teachers will be communicating with you how they will be adapting their grading practice to our revised grading policy. Grade books will continue to be used, the methods in how we use them to reflect progress will be similar to what students were already used to.
