National LGBTQIA PRIDE Month
|
|
Yesterday we shared the history of Pride Month, and today we share some important facts regarding this month’s celebration.
- Did you know there was a gay rights movement before Pride Month? The work actually started back in 1924 when Henry Gerber created the Society for Human Rights in Chicago which was the first group to campaign for gay rights.
- The Stonewall Riots, which we talked about yesterday, was not America’s first LGBTQIA uprising. The first documented uprising took place in 1959 in LA, 10 years prior to Stonewall.
- The first Gay Pride Parade was held in Chicago in 1970.
- Brenda Howard is considered the “Mother of Pride”, creating the Christopher Street Liberation Day March in New York City in 1970 which commemorated the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. This served as the first Gay Pride Parade on record. Howard passed away in 2003.
- President Clinton was the first sitting US President to officially recognize Pride Month in 1999.
- Gilbert Baker is the designer of the Rainbow Flag. He created it in 1978 as a symbol of hope for the LGBTQIA community and those who are their allies.

National Great Outdoors Month
|
|
Great Outdoors Month is truly a celebration of getting out and enjoying nature. Unfortunately, some outdoor activities such as rock climbing or whitewater paddling bring with them some level of risk that participants need to be aware of and comfortable with. Cliff jumping is one such example. We mistakenly mentioned that cliff jumping was allowed at Pewit's Nest, but it is not allowed at this site. You will need to look to other spots if that is on your bucket list and make sure that it is a safe and legal place to engage in that activity.
We continue to celebrate National Great Outdoors Month with this message about the Health and Mental Benefits of Outside. There's never been a better time, and bigger need, for the benefits of nature.
-
Being outdoors boosts your energy. One study suggests that spending 20 minutes in the open air gives your brain an energy boost comparable to one cup of coffee.
-
Chasing away the blues. Anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues can be eased. Studies have shown being outdoors lowers levels of cortisol, a hormone that’s a marker for stress.
-
Better brain function. The attention-improving effect of nature is so strong it has been studied as a method of treating kids with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and is linked to higher levels of concentration, creativity, and improved mental clarity.
-
Getting a boost of vitamin D from the sun. Vitamin D is essential for bone growth, regulates your immune system, and can help battle depression. An estimated 40% of U.S. adults are vitamin D deficient, which can lead to osteoporosis, cancer, heart attacks, and strokes.
-
Improving your vision. People who suffer from Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), a problem caused by staring at computers, tablets, and smartphones too long, may alleviate blurred and double vision, red eyes, and headaches by being outdoors.
AND… more outdoor time is associated with a lower overall risk of early death.

Boy’s Varsity Baseball was back at it with CMH and put up a great showing, but lost in a pitcher’s dual 1 - 2. Dan H went the distance on the mound allowing only 4 hits and 2 runs over six innings. The lefty struck out 9 batters and walked none in a great outing for the Varsity Lasers. Offensively KM outhit CMH with 6 hits total.
