Attention 8th graders!

The 8th grade "graduate" yard signs have arrived at the middle school. There is one sign per student. Signs are available for pick up only by a parent. Please feel free to stop by the front office during the school day to pick up your family's yard sign. We will also be in the office until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday (6/3). If you are unable to pick up the sign at school prior to the completion ceremony, parents may pick up the signs that day.

Coming to KMMS for 2021-2022
SUMMER SLIDE?

Reading over the summer is so important in order to maintain skills learned over the school year. Summer slide (losing the skills or partially losing the skills you gained over the school year) is real. According to NWEA, By the summer after seventh grade, students lose on average 36% of their school-year gains in reading and a whopping 50% of their school-year gains in math. In other words, summer learning loss increases with age through elementary and middle school—a troubling trend that should be examined further.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM

Last summer we had 82 students and 26 staff members participate in the Summer Reading Challenge. With our combined efforts we read 359 books for a total of 128,002 pages! Although this is something to celebrate . . . we can do better! Let’s try to reach our goal of a half a million pages, that’s 500,000 pages, read this summer! We can do it!! The directions are simple: To participate simply read a book, complete this google form, and submit it! Submit a form for each book that you read between June 11 - August 30. Your pages will be added to our goal and you will be entered into a drawing to win a prize.

Here is an article with information on the impact of summer slide. Check back next week for some information about summer math work.
Lost & Found

There are many unclaimed items in our Lost & Found. We have included some photos of the bigger items. Lost & Found items will be here at the middle school until Friday, June 11th. After that day, they will be donated.

Mrs. Hoff will go over details and specifics and answer your questions. The google meet code is in the flyer here.

8th Grade
End of the Year Celebrations

Attention 8th Grade Parents / Guardians:

Our 8th grade Completion Ceremonies will be held on Wednesday, June 9th. There will be two ceremonies:
Students in the Discover House will be at 9:00 a.m.
Students in the Navigate and Create houses will be at 11:00 a.m.

Your child will be dismissed for the day after the ceremony with a parent. We will have a sign out procedure with one of our staff members.

CEREMONY DETAILS:
The brief ceremony will be held outside on the south end of the KMMS property. There is no outdoor seating. Families are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. We will set aside an area for handicapped seating.
If the weather does not cooperate, we will cancel the outdoor event and hold the ceremony with students only in our gym. We will livestream and record the indoor event for families to view, and will post a link to the livestream on our website  www.kmsd.edu/ms.

8TH GRADE FIELD DAY:
We are unable to host our traditional evening 8th grade dance following the Completion Ceremony. Instead, a group of our students are planning a field day for Tuesday, June 8th beginning at 9:00 a.m.  The 20-21 yearbooks will be distributed that day, and our generous PTO will be providing a class T-shirt for students to wear on Tuesday.  The T-shirts will be handed out Monday, the 7th. The field day is only for Kettle Moraine MS 8th grade students.

Important Information Regarding COVID Testing
Dear KM Families,
There has been some confusion about PCR vs. antigen testing for COVID-19.
If a child stays home OR has been sent home with symptoms of COVID-19 and you wish to have them tested, KMSD requires a negative PCR test, which follows the CDC and Waukesha County guidelines for schools. This is for children with symptoms.

Not every doctor’s office automatically does PCR testing. Please verify the type of testing before having it done.

Documented proof of a negative PCR test is required before a child is allowed back in the classroom along with the child being symptom free for at least 24 hours without the use of medication.

Feel free to email your health staff or call the COVID-19 RN or Health Hotline, if you have any questions.
