Hello KMMS families,

Ms. Lloyd and I have continued to alternate Fridays to deliver messages about “how we treat other people.” My message this morning to students focused on indirect treatment that disrupts other students’ learning.

Last spring, about 50% of KMMS students responded in a survey that “Other students' behavior hurts my learning.” Using our mentor program, our teachers dug deeper to learn more.. Here are some takeaways our teachers had after talking with our students this fall.

Disruptive behavior usually means talking or blurting out, causing distractions or unnecessary noises, and conversations that aren’t appropriate for the place and time.

Our teachers asked our students a logical follow-up question.

“What steps do you take when someone is interrupting your learning?” Students provided great feedback that helped create a simple 3-step process.

Start by ignoring the behavior.

We reminded our students that if they can find a way to focus and

it isn’t overly distracting, just ignore it.

Ask the individual to stop.

We reminded our students that it’s not just what you say but how

you say it. Be patient, be respectful.

Finally, involve a teacher or adult.

It’s great when students can respond well to students and get

back on track, but sometimes an adult needs to be involved.

Our school board policy 2402 on the Code of Student Conduct states that all students must show consideration for fellow students/staff, promote good decorum, and contribute to a favorable academic atmosphere. We firmly believe that students' direct and indirect treatment of one another matters and keeping these conversations at the forefront will allow KMMS to continue to achieve at high levels and prepare our students for high school and beyond.

Thank you for all of your support to close out 2022. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday season. See you in 2023!

SAFETY TIPS FROM DEPUTY CATTANI

Happy Friday KMMS Families!

Welcome to Safety Tips from Deputy Cattani! Every so often, I will be including some safety information in the newsletter. These tips will range from safety concerns at the school, to information that will be useful to implement in your households.

Continuing this week we will be focusing on traffic safety regarding student drop-off and pick-up. Below I have included a diagram of the proper route you should be using. When arriving to the school, you should always be entering from the West Entrance as the Central Entrance is closed for buses to arrive at the facility and safely load/unload students. You should then stop at the designated drop-off/pick-up area on the south side of the school, near the soccer fields. Expect to be stopped for buses to leave the campus. You will then proceed past Dousman Elementary and out the East Entrance.

We should not have any parents entering the Central Entrance from 7:00-7:20am or 2:25-2:45pm (1:55-2:20pm on Thursdays). Additionally, the parking lot between KMMS and Dousman Elementary is for staff/visitor parking only, it is not an alternative location for parents to utilize for drop-off/pick-ups.

Please note that when arriving for afternoon pick-up, to prevent a back-up on Ottawa Ave., the West Entrance will not be opened until 2:40pm (2:07pm on Thursdays). Please plan accordingly, we cannot have vehicles stopping at the closed entrance, slowly driving by, or stopping further up the road, as it impedes normal traffic conditions.

These rules only apply during normal drop-off/pick-up times.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (262) 965-6500x2064 during school hours.
