Hello KMMS families,

In a previous Principal Post, I messaged that our students took a survey at the end of last school year, and about 50% of our students agreed or strongly agreed that “People are often disrespectful to others at my school.” We used our mentoring program this fall to dive deeper into this question. Here are some takeaways from our teachers:

  • Students are recognizing the disrespectful behavior in others, but are struggling with self-reflection and identifying their own words and actions that could be perceived as disrespectful.
  • Students are perceiving disrespectful behavior as talking during instruction and work time, not following the directions of teachers, and ”joking” with peers that is “taken the wrong way.”

We always want to intervene with our students with dignity and keep relationships at the forefront. Our staff continues to have conversations with students about how their behavior may be perceived by others and the importance of treating one another with respect. This work includes helping students learn to use good judgment with appropriate humor and to consistently interact with peers in a respectful manner. We have awesome students, and it is rewarding to see them grow as citizens in our school community.

I hope all of our families had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are managing the stress of the holiday season. Please reach out if we can be of any assistance!

Sincerely,

Matt Kitzerow
