Hello KMMS families,

Do you ever think about what it would have been like to grow up with Snapchat? Do you wish you did, or are you glad you didn’t? Using good judgment and navigating this messaging platform appropriately is really difficult for middle school students. It’s also really difficult as a parent to help middle schoolers make good choices. Proper supervision and monitoring helps. Regular and meaningful conversations are necessary. Parents may find this resource helpful to understand some ins and outs of Snapchat - https://www.commonsensemedia.org/articles/parents-ultimate-guide-to-snapchat

From my perspective, some key takeaways from this resource would be:

  1. Electronic Footprint - “It's best for teens to understand that nothing done online is really temporary.”
  2. Snapstreaks - “Because of the intense bonds that children can form over social media, they can feel that a Snapstreak is a measure of their friendship…and that if they don't keep it up, they'll let the other person down. Teens have even been known to give friends access to their Snapchat accounts to keep a streak going if they can't do it themselves.”
  3. SnapMap - “Kids can submit snaps to the Snap Map, and their name and location could appear on a public map. But the bigger risk with Snap Map is a teen having their location seen by all their friends -- since some of their Snapchat contacts may not be real friends.”
  4. Time - “Snapstreaks and Stories add a time-pressure element that makes kids feel like they have to check in. If it ever seems like your kid is stressing out and not using the app for fun, it's time to step in.”

If you are struggling to parent your student when it comes to Snapchat and social media platforms, please know that you are not alone. We encourage our community members to have honest conversations with one another and find ways to support each other. Our School Resource Officer, Alyssa Cattani, is always available to help.

Thank you for your ongoing support,

Building and Living Our Vision and Mission

The PTO would like to thank the KMMS community for engaging with our PTO Board in developing new Vision and Mission statements for the organization going forward.

THIS IS YOUR PTO and we were energized and inspired by the input we received from staff, parents and students over the past several months as we developed new vision and mission statements for the organization. We felt it was critical to be very clear about why this organization exists and focus our efforts for greater community impact.

Your participation in surveys, listening sessions and hallway conversations have led to a new Vision and Mission statement that will anchor our efforts going forward. You can review the process and culmination of this work via this link. Feel free to share this information throughout our community.

As we look at what we can accomplish with the remainder of this school year, we will be focusing on connections and social opportunities for our students, families, staff and the wider KMMS community.  Our first effort in this vein was sponsoring the recent GLOW dance for middle school students, in collaboration with the Student Senate. We want to give a special shout out to Ms. Passaglia and Mr. Martin who lead the Student Senate planning, as well as, Kelly Fouts who led the PTO support effort.

We are thrilled and grateful to report that the “Glow Dance” extras that were requested from the community in the form of financial gifts, baked goods, glow accessories, additional chaperones, etc. were filled and resulted in a very well attended and well executed event. Not only did our students have a blast and make memories as one community, we received a record profit of $1,200 via concession sales! We will be sharing information in the coming months of how these funds will be reinvested in our students.

THANK YOU KMMS COMMUNITY!!!

It's time again to show the teachers and staff how much they are appreciated! We will be providing a meal for all staff on Thursday February 16, 2023 which is the afternoon of teacher conferences. If you would like to contribute please sign up here.

We will be offering a soup and salad bar. If bringing a soup or pasta salad please make enough to feed 10-15 people. We will also be restocking much needed break room supplies.
