Hello KMMS families,

So Aaron Rodgers is headed to the New York Jets… or is he? Nothing is official yet. Did you find yourself checking your phone more often this week for the countless updates and speculative social media posts? You may have been tuned in to the drama for a few reasons:

  1. You love Aaron and realize Hall of Fame quarterbacks are not a dime a dozen. You are hoping the rumors aren’t true and he’s staying in Green Bay.
  2. You’re sick of Aaron and the “drama” and ready to be done with it all.
  3. You’re experiencing FOMO (fear of missing out) and don’t want to be the last to know or be clueless when everyone else is talking about the big news.

Okay, so it might not be FOMO with regards to Mr. Rodgers and your cell phone activity this week, but FOMO is a real phenomenon that is one of the many ways social media has increased anxiety in tweens and teens. Here are some other ways social media has increased anxiety in our nation’s youth:

  • Seeing peers post about events that they were not invited to.
  • Feeling pressure to post attractive content.
  • Feeling pressure to get as many likes, comments, and shares as possible. Social status feels dependent on those likes, comments, and shares.
  • People posting unkind content or the fear of others posting unkind content about them.
  • Overwhelming feelings from too much communication.

It is helpful for parents and family members to be aware of warning signs that social media and cell phone use is becoming a major problem for their child. These signs could include:

  • Not following the rules established between parent and child, like turning off location or changing the password so parents cannot easily monitor.
  • Becoming extremely upset and even threatening to harm one’s self if the cell phone is taken away by the parent.
  • Being overly secretive about his/her cell phone use.

Teenagers who take a break from their cell phones actually feel a sense of relief. Monitoring your middle schooler’s cell phone usage can feel like a full-time job. We want to thank our families for their support, knowing that unhealthy cell phone and social media activity can interfere with learning.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Go Lasers!

Pi (π) Day Celebrations at KMMS

Tuesday was a big day for pies at KMMS. During the 6th grade lunch hour, Mr. Korb and Mrs. Cowan were "pied in the face" by students. This was the reward assigned to the grade level with the most participation at the PTO Noodles fundraising night. Math classes also celebrated by eating pies and reciting Pi by many digits.

T-shirts for 8th Graders

Every year KMMS PTO has provided each 8th grade student with a traditional class t-shirt. We want to keep this tradition going, but we need your help!

We are seeking partnerships with local businesses and/or families to help sponsor part of the cost for these shirts. The sponsor name or business logo will be displayed on the back of the shirt below the student names These T-shirts are worn by the students on the annual 8th grade bowling trip and beyond.

Note that the proceeds raised from these sponsorship donations will help fund 8th grade end of the year activities.

If you know of, or are affiliated with, a business that would be interested in sponsoring shirts for our students, or, if your family would like to make a donation, please email us at carriefosspto@gmail

KMMS PTO thanks you in advance for considering a sponsorship in this annual 8th grade tradition!
