Hello KMMS families,

Ms. Lloyd and I want to thank you for engaging with us for a successful start of the school year. Our beginning of the year messages regarding, “How are you treating other students?” and asking our students “How are other students treating you?” will continue throughout the year. These two basic questions are the gateway to meaningful conversation, perspective-taking, and building and maintaining a positive school culture. Middle school can be a difficult three years, but families and school staff can help facilitate incredible growth and personal development during this time.

You may not get much of a response from your child if you ask them, “How are others treating you?” A shoulder shrug and “fine,” would not be out of the ordinary. Not all of our kids want to dive deep into meaningful conversation or dive deep during that moment when we are asking questions. Consider another approach. Consider asking your child how they have observed others treating people well or others treating people poorly. Why do they think people are treating others poorly? The conversation could naturally lead to, “Does anyone treat you this way?” and of course, “Do you treat anyone that way?” Sometimes our students will be open books and other times it will feel like pulling teeth. That’s part of the fun! Keeping the conversations going will establish open lines of communication and make it meaningful to them when they are ready to talk.

We appreciate all that you do,

Matt Kitzerow Laura Lloyd

Check out the video linked below:

10 Common Warning Signs of A Mental Health Condition: Video Link

NAMI-National Alliance on Mental Health

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!

Secure Your Belongings

Every KMMS student has been assigned a padlock and a locker. Parents, please remind your students to use and lock their locker with the padlock in order to secure their personal belongings. The middle school cannot be responsible for items that have disappeared from unlocked lockers.

Learning Lab - Mon-Wed @ KMMS

Learning Lab meets in the library right after school until 4:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. The purpose of Learning Lab is to give students a chance to get their homework done in a quiet, safe, supervised place after school. You do not need to sign up ahead of time - just show up! If you are still in the building after school, it is expected that you are in an activity like Learning Lab, and that you are participating and getting work done!
