Hello KMMS families,

We had an exciting week in KM that we are highlighting in our newsletter. Take a look at all of the learning and fun that is happening. Thank you to our teachers for creating all of these opportunities for our students!

In addition, you may be interested to see our announcements to students. Each Friday, Ms. Lloyd and I have made announcements that ask our students, "How are we treating each other?" This Friday's announcement focused on communicating and respecting boundaries, as well as digging into "What is a snitch?" Snitching vs. Doing the Right Thing. There's a big difference!

Thank you for your ongoing support and helping our students with their personal development and being a good citizen. Have a wonderful weekend.

Mummies in 6 Navigate and 6 Discover

To deepen their learning of Ancient Egypt, a docent with the Milwaukee Public Museum visited KM Middle School this week to work with our 6th-graders. Students learned the details of the major phases of Egyptian mummification and examined the historical context and origins. Students also identified the general concepts of the afterlife. Students participated in a step-by-step process of mummification, including organ removal, the use of canopic jars, and the procedure for wrapping, adorning, and entombing the pharaoh and other royalty of ancient Egypt. It was a hands-on activity that was thousands of years in the making.

Rushing Waters Field Trip

The 7 Discover house spent Wednesday afternoon at Rushing Waters Fishery in Palmyra. Students experienced authentic interaction with a farm ecosystem. This trip was designed to help students hone their skills of organizing and representing information on a skills continuum. Take a look at the photos below.

KMMS Talent Development Field Trip

Four middle school students traveled to Whitewater with Mrs. Drolshagen on Tuesday to attend a Middle School Leadership Conference led by Ted Neitzke, CESA 6 CEO. Activities centered around:

  • the desired qualities of leaders
  • reflective questioning
  • empathy
  • a Mount Rushmore of people we respect / admire and why
  • buffalo leadership vs. cows (just ask)
  • the importance of understanding vs. judging.

Many tools were introduced to help students develop a better understanding of themselves and others. The message was clearly driven home at the end of the conference when Mr. Neitzke asked all students to write the following sentence on the last page of their booklets: I am a leader who will be true to myself with everyone everywhere.

STUDENT SERVICES UPDATE

Greetings from the Student Services department!  We are thrilled to announce that we have added a school social worker to our team!  Baylee Kittel is working full-time with the KM school district, splitting her time between the high school campus and the middle school.  Mrs. Kittel comes to us with previous school social work experience and is excited to be a new resource for our students and families.  Here is the middle school team:

Mrs. Cowan - Counselor: 6th Grade and Create [email protected]

Mr. Korb - Counselor: 7th Grade and 8th Grade [email protected]

Mrs. Beyerl - School Psychologist [email protected]

Mrs. Kittel - School Social Worker [email protected]

During the month of September, all students were shown a brief video entitled "How to Make an Appointment with Your School Counselor."  Our counselors, psychologist, and social worker have an online form which students can access anytime to request an appointment, and they can also be reached via email.

Throughout the year, our student services team will be coming into classrooms to deliver lessons on topics such as bullying, substance abuse prevention, mental health, and future academic planning.  Our 6th graders started the year with lessons about bullying prevention, and our 7th and 8th graders are currently receiving lessons on the topic of Appropriate and Safe Technology Use.  This lesson includes material taken from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, as well as an examination of what our state laws and the Kettle Moraine Operating Rules and Regulations have to say about technology use among children.  The goal of this lesson is to promote empathy and respect in digital interactions and to inform students of how to respond if they encounter something inappropriate or problematic in their use of technology.

We encourage you to continue these important conversations at home!  Our next lessons will be on the topic of mental health, and an email message was sent home earlier this week on that subject.  As always, if you are interested in viewing the material that is being discussed in the classrooms, please reach out to your child's counselor.

Happy School Bus Safety Week!

KMMS would like to thank our bus company, Dousman Transport, and our dedicated drivers for keeping us safe. Click here for a review of the DTC recommended school bus safety tips.

Lost Items that Need to be Found

The KMMS Lost and Found is growing already. We have lots of sweatshirts, lunch bags and water bottles waiting for their owners to pick them up. Please encourage your student to check for belongings on their way into or out of the building.

Learning Lab - Mon-Wed @ KMMS

Learning Lab meets in the library right after school until 4:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. The purpose of Learning Lab is to give students a chance to get their homework done in a quiet, safe, supervised place after school. You do not need to sign up ahead of time - just show up! If you are still in the building after school, it is expected that you are in an activity like Learning Lab, and that you are participating and getting work done!
