PPI celebrates 35 years of service to industry

Since 1989, PPI has helped industry change the process, material or technology to reduce pollution at the source rather than treating it at the end of the pipe. The Kansas Small Business Environmental Assistance Program, or SBEAP, was added to its services umbrella in 1995. PPI, one of three core programs housed under K-State Engineering Extension, has since grown to host various programs helping industry improve compliance with environmental regulations and reduce emissions to the environment.

"Once in" is not "always in" now


EPA has implemented a new regulation that permits major sources of hazardous air pollutants, or HAPs, to be reclassified as area sources if they decrease their emissions. This rule, also known as MM2A, reverses the previous "once in, always in" policy, which required major sources to maintain that status permanently. This could benefit industries that have modified their operations or products, adopted operational restrictions after being designated as major sources, or whose actual emissions are significantly lower than the major source threshold.

Online water permit tools


PPI recently partnered with KDHE to launch online water permit tools designed to simplify the permit identification process. By answering a series of simple questions, businesses can determine the specific permits required for their operations. These tools are perfect if you’re starting a new business and want to know if you need industrial wastewater, industrial stormwater, construction stormwater or other water-related permits. 

Industrial environmental sustainability course


CE690, a three-day course that covers real-world strategies to reduce industrial pollution is available to take for professional development hours. Explore water and energy conservation, hazardous-waste reduction and air-emissions control through Kansas case studies and hands-on experience with industry-standard tools. Learn to assess environmental impacts and calculate cost-saving benefits that protect both the environment and human health. The cost for taking CE690 for professional development is $300. Online hazardous waste training


Hazardous waste handlers are required to complete training annually, and new employees must be trained within six months of taking a position that requires they handle hazardous waste. This training needs to be documented and maintained for at least three years. PPI offers online training that includes a certificate of completion for $50 per user.
